Fleet Technician Heavy Duty Mechanic

Municipality of Jasper

Jasper, Alberta

Full-Time Continuous | On-Site

CUPE 1458, Pay Level 30

Compensation: $44.68 to $48.42 per hour

destinationone Consulting has partnered with the Municipality of Jasper to recruit a Fleet Technician (Heavy Duty Mechanic).

This is a full-time, continuous opportunity for an experienced Heavy Equipment Technician who brings strong diagnostic capability, sound judgment and a commitment to safe, reliable public service. The successful candidate will play a central role in maintaining Jasper’s municipal vehicles and equipment, supporting seasonal and emergency operations, and strengthening the Municipality’s fleet maintenance program.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Town Manager, the Fleet Technician will take day-to-day ownership of the Municipality’s fleet maintenance function and directly supervise one licensed light-duty mechanic.

The Fleet Technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining and repairing a diverse municipal fleet of approximately 60 to 70 vehicles and pieces of equipment. The fleet includes heavy equipment, tandem and single-axle commercial vehicles, light-duty vehicles, five fire service vehicles, diesel and gasoline generators, tractors, landscaping equipment and small-engine assets.

The role combines hands-on mechanical work with fleet planning, diagnostics, regulatory compliance, record keeping, inventory management, operator education and team leadership. A key priority will be restoring the Municipality’s internal Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program capability and reducing its reliance on external inspection and repair services.

This position requires an experienced technician who can troubleshoot across a broad range of equipment, establish maintenance priorities, work independently and take ownership of the safe and reliable operation of the Municipality’s fleet.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Maintenance and Repair

  • Take day-to-day ownership of the Municipality’s fleet maintenance function, including maintenance planning, work prioritization and operational readiness.
  • Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on small engines, equipment and light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Inspect, diagnose, service and repair municipal vehicles and equipment, including emergency service units.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic and electrical issues using technical manuals, diagnostic software and testing equipment.
  • Complete repairs and maintenance in accordance with municipal standards, manufacturer requirements and applicable regulations.
  • Operate municipal vehicles and equipment safely when required for inspection, testing, maintenance and operational support.
  • Support seasonal, emergency response, snow removal and road maintenance operations.
  • Take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of employees under their direction and others present at the worksite.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Regulatory Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure vehicles and equipment comply with applicable Alberta transportation, commercial vehicle and occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Monitor registration, inspection and renewal requirements under the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records, service reports and maintenance documentation.
  • Participate actively in workplace safety programs and required safety training.
  • Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment and safe work practices are consistently followed.
  • Identify and report unsafe equipment, working conditions or operational risks.
  • Promote a workplace free from violence and harassment.

Fleet Administration and Inventory

  • Maintain accurate digital and physical maintenance records.
  • Use computer systems and diagnostic software to monitor maintenance activity and fleet condition.
  • Procure, receive and track parts and materials in accordance with municipal purchasing and accounting procedures.
  • Maintain an organized and current inventory of parts, supplies and components.
  • Monitor fleet vehicles, inventory and municipal operators for compliance with the Municipality’s fleet and asset management programs.
  • Work collaboratively with Public Works and other municipal departments to support operational readiness and service delivery.

Team Leadership and Operational Support

  • Directly supervise and provide technical guidance to one licensed light-duty mechanic.
  • Train and supervise registered apprentices.
  • Educate staff on fleet operation, inspection and maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure municipal operators understand their responsibilities under the Municipality’s fleet maintenance program.
  • Monitor staff performance and support adherence to established procedures, productivity expectations and safety standards.
  • Maintain clear and timely communication with management regarding fleet operations, maintenance requirements, employee performance and emerging risks.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, accountable and service-focused work environment.
  • Coach municipal operators on equipment inspections, preventative maintenance and responsible equipment operation.
  • Build positive and respectful working relationships across a diverse municipal workforce.

Requirements

Candidates must possess:

  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience maintaining and repairing small engines, equipment and light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.

  • Living and Working in Jasper

Jasper offers an exceptional setting for individuals who value mountain living and non-motorized outdoor recreation, including hiking, skiing, cycling and exploring the national park.

Candidates should also consider the practical realities of relocating to Jasper. Housing availability is constrained, the cost of living can be higher than in many Alberta communities, and purchasing a home can be challenging.

To support relocation, the Municipality has reserved a one-bedroom suite for the successful candidate at a rental rate below Jasper’s current private-market pricing. The accommodation is available on a month-to-month basis and may remain available for as long as the successful candidate wishes to occupy it.

The suite is best suited to an individual or couple. Candidates relocating with a family should discuss their housing requirements early in the process. While larger housing cannot be guaranteed, the Municipality may be able to assist the successful candidate in navigating local housing options and community connections.

This opportunity will be particularly well suited to someone who is intentionally drawn to Jasper’s close-knit community, public-service environment and national park lifestyle.

    Application Process

To be considered for this opportunity, please submit a resume and cover letter through the destinationone Consulting careers page. Applications should clearly demonstrate how your experience and qualifications align with the requirements of the position.

Shortlisted candidates should expect an initial interview, technical or practical skills validation, credential verification and professional reference checks. Candidates may also be asked to provide copies of relevant certifications, licences and other supporting documentation.

All applications and expressions of interest will be treated in confidence. Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and the search will remain active until a successful appointment is made.

The Municipality of Jasper values the different viewpoints, experiences and perspectives employees bring to the organization and is committed to supporting a diverse workforce.
