Job description

Position Summary:

Environmental & Occupational Health and Safety Specialist serves as primary to support safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible operations across our parts distribution centres, warehouses, and offices.

Working closely with Operations, Facilities, Human Resources, and management, this position develops practical programs to prevent workplace injuries, manage environmental risks, and support compliance with applicable legislation and company requirements.


The Specialist will also coordinate the development, implementation, and continual improvement of management systems aligned with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, including certification readiness and audit activities.


Key Responsibilities:

Occupational Health and Safety:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, and programs for warehouse, distribution, and office operations.
  • Monitor applicable occupational health and safety requirements and recommend updates to company practices, documentation, and training.
  • Support MPCA compliance with applicable occupational health and safety and environmental legal and other requirements by developing programs, monitoring obligations, advising management, and coordinating corrective actions.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, risk assessments, and job hazard analyses; recommend controls and track corrective actions through completion.
  • Lead and document an annual workplace risk assessment covering warehouse, distribution, and office operations; review significant hazards, confirm the effectiveness of existing controls, and coordinate resulting action plans.
  • Lead and document monthly safety Gemba walks with relevant operational stakeholders; record observations, assign corrective actions, and monitor follow-up through completion.
  • Assess risks associated with forklifts and pedestrian traffic, loading docks, racking, material handling, ergonomics, equipment, and contractor activities.
  • Conduct and document safety inspections of warehouse equipment and powered material handling equipment; identify deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions with Operations, Facilities, and service providers.
  • Maintain operator training, certification, and authorization records, including renewal and expiry dates, for powered warehouse equipment such as order pickers, reach trucks, Packmules, counterbalance forklifts, and similar equipment; notify operational leaders of upcoming expiries and follow up on required renewals.
  • Investigate incidents, injuries, near misses, and unsafe conditions; identify root causes and coordinate corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support Joint Health and Safety Committee activities, including meetings, inspections, minutes, recommendations, and follow-up.
  • Lead and coordinate emergency preparedness activities, including fire and evacuation drills, first aid arrangements, and spill response; document drill results and coordinate follow-up actions.
  • Support safe storage and handling procedures for EV batteries, hazardous products, and other materials requiring specialized controls.
  • Maintain WHMIS documentation, safety data sheets, personal protective equipment requirements, and safety training records.
  • Partner with Human Resources and operational leaders on workplace injury reporting, WSIB matters, modified duties, and return-to-work arrangements.

Environmental Management:

  • Develop and maintain procedures for waste management, recycling, hazardous materials, spill prevention, and pollution prevention.
  • Identify environmental aspects and impacts associated with MPCA operations and establish appropriate controls.
  • Monitor applicable environmental legal and other requirements and coordinate required records, registrations, and reporting with internal stakeholders.
  • Support environmental reporting and product stewardship initiatives related to automotive parts, packaging, chemicals, and other applicable materials.
  • Conduct environmental inspections and support investigations of spills, releases, and other environmental incidents.
  • Work with Operations, Facilities, and service providers to improve waste segregation, resource efficiency, and environmental performance.

ISO 14001 and ISO 45001:

  • Coordinate the implementation and continual improvement of environmental and occupational health and safety management systems aligned with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
  • Conduct gap assessments and maintain implementation plans, procedures, operational controls, and supporting records.
  • Establish and monitor environmental and health and safety objectives, performance indicators, and improvement plans with relevant stakeholders.
  • Support worker consultation and participation in occupational health and safety initiatives.
  • Coordinate internal audits, compliance evaluations, external audits, and corrective action follow-up.
  • Prepare management review materials covering performance, risks, audit findings, compliance obligations, and improvement opportunities.
  • Support certification readiness and ongoing conformity with applicable management system requirements.

Training, Reporting, and Collaboration:

  • Develop and deliver employee orientation, refresher training, toolbox talks, and environmental and safety awareness initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate performance metrics and prepare reports for site leadership and corporate stakeholders.
  • Analyze incident, inspection, training, and environmental data to identify trends and improvement priorities.
  • Work with employees and supervisors to integrate safe work practices into daily operations and assess risks associated with operational changes.
  • Coordinate with consultants, auditors, service providers, and regulatory representatives as required.
  • Promote timely hazard reporting, employee participation, and accountability for corrective actions.

Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum five years of progressive experience in environmental management, occupational health and safety, or a combination of both, within warehousing, distribution, logistics, manufacturing, or a comparable operational environment.
  • Working knowledge of occupational health and safety, workplace injury reporting, and environmental legal and other requirements applicable to MPCA operations, including the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations and WHMIS requirements.
  • Practical knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 requirements, including management system implementation, maintenance, or continual improvement.
  • Experience conducting workplace inspections, risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective action follow-up.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to deliver training and work effectively with employees, supervisors, and management.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and electronic reporting and document management tools.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and translate regulatory and management system requirements into practical workplace procedures.

Preferred:

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), or a comparable professional designation.
  • Internal Auditor or Lead Auditor training in ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or both.
  • Experience supporting ISO implementation, certification, or surveillance audits.
  • Joint Health and Safety Committee certification and experience supporting committee activities.
  • Experience with WSIB claims coordination, modified work, and return-to-work programs.
  • Knowledge of industrial ergonomics, transportation of dangerous goods, EV battery safety, or hazardous materials management.
  • Experience supporting multiple facilities and applying requirements across provincial jurisdictions.

Working Conditions:

  • Regular presence in warehouse, distribution, and office environments.
  • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment in designated areas.
  • Occasional travel to other MPCA facilities, as required.
  • Ability to provide occasional support for training, inspections, audits, or incident response outside regular working hours, with advance notice where reasonably practicable and in accordance with applicable employment standards and company policies.
