About Us

The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Division plays a key role in workplace safety in the province of Nova Scotia. Workplace health and safety is our number one priority. The Internal Responsibility System (IRS) is the foundation of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act. The IRS is based on the principle that everyone in the workplace shares the responsibility for creating a safe and healthy workplace to the extent of their authority and ability to do so. The OHS Division supplements the IRS by establishing and clarifying the responsibilities under the law. The OHS Division also promotes compliance with the OHS Act and intervenes appropriately when necessary.

About Our Opportunity

As an Electrical Engineer, you will work independently as an engineering expert and department specialist. You may be called upon to make critical decisions and recommendations that impact occupational health and safety, to establish standards associated with engineering required at workplaces throughout the province. You will work primarily within the Occupational Health and Safety Act and relevant regulations. You will be required to make recommendations to the Executive Director as part of regulatory approval procedures.

Primary Accountabilities

You will review document filings, submissions for approvals, deviations, and codes of practice to the Department, related to electrical safety in Nova Scotia. You will also be responsible for assisting Occupational Health and Safety Officers in their inspections of surface and underground mines and advising the Department on law development. You will be expected to travel and conduct on-site inspections at workplaces throughout the province, applying relevant laws and conditions of approval in accordance with the enforcement policy of the Occupational Health and Safety Division. Appearance as a court witness may be required.

You will be required to interpret relevant statutes, policies, and precedents, and be called upon to develop written interpretation guides for use by external and internal clients. You will work independently, with a minimum of supervision. You will also be involved from time to time in the technical review of regulations that fall under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

As an Electrical Engineer, you will work under the general direction of the Manager of Engineering and Science.

Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and at least 6 years of related work experience as an electrical engineer, including work with occupational health and safety rules and standards, including the Canadian Electrical Code. You must be registered as a Full Member with Engineers Nova Scotia, or eligible to register as a Full Member immediately.

This work also requires the following qualifications and experience:

  • Detailed knowledge of the NS Occupational Health and Safety Act, relevant regulations and standards.
  • Experience interpreting and relaying technical information with others in a succinct, clear and respectful manner.
  • Strong communication skills (oral, written, electronic) to effectively convey information to wide audiences.
  • Skills and experience to deliver presentations and training modules to departmental staff, and special interest groups.
  • Considerable judgment, tact and diplomacy and the ability to provide recommendations based on information that is sound, technically accurate, and reasonable.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in industry, and the impact of technology and equipment on workplace health and safety.
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain effective professional relationships with clients, partners, other government departments and external agencies.
  • Experience working both independently and as part of a team
  • Application of equity, diversity, accessibility and inclusion principles to all areas of your work, and support for colleagues to do the same.
  • Ability to conduct work in a respectful manner
  • Physical ability to work in large industrial workplaces and walk long distances.
  • A valid driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle.

While not required, it is considered an asset if you have:

  • Experience working as part of a national technical standard committee; or
  • A professional safety designation, such as the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation
  • Experience working at a surface or underground mine
  • Experience enforcing legal requirements
  • Experience auditing or verifying compliance with health and safety rules at a workplace

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: Written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
