ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is seeking a Supervisor, Supply Chain to lead a team of approximately five Supply Chain professionals and support the continued development and execution of TransAlta’s Supply Chain strategy.

This is a working supervisor role, requiring a balance of people leadership, strategic thinking, and hands-on execution. The Supervisor will be accountable for developing team capability, advancing category management, sustaining projects, MSAs development and supplier relationship management practices, strengthening Supply Chain governance, and driving continuous improvement across procurement processes.

The role will work closely with internal business partners to ensure sourcing and procurement activities are aligned with business priorities, commercial objectives, operational requirements, and TransAlta’s governance framework.

A key focus of the position will be moving the organization beyond transactional procurement toward a more strategic, disciplined and data-driven approach to managing spend, suppliers, risk and value creation.

This role is based out of our office in downtown Calgary, Alberta This is a full-time role with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

  • Lead, coach and develop a team of approximately five Supply Chain professionals, with clear priorities, accountabilities and performance expectations.
  • Build team capability in strategic sourcing, negotiations, contract management, category management and supplier relationship management.
  • Advance TransAlta’s Category Management framework, including category planning, spend analysis, market intelligence, sourcing strategies, supplier segmentation and value identification.
  • Develop and execute category strategies with business stakeholders to drive consolidation, standardization, cost optimization, risk reduction and commercial leverage.
  • Advance Supplier Relationship Management, including supplier segmentation, performance measures, governance, business reviews and improvement plans for strategic and critical suppliers.
  • Strengthen Supply Chain governance and procurement discipline across sourcing, competitive bidding, approvals, contracting, supplier onboarding and policy compliance.
  • Simplify and improve SCM policies, processes, controls, standards, tools and reporting while maintaining appropriate commercial and risk controls.
  • Lead and support strategic sourcing activities, including market analysis, competitive processes, evaluations, negotiations, award recommendations and contract formation.
  • Provide commercial guidance to the team on complex sourcing, negotiations, supplier issues and contract matters.
  • Drive Total Cost of Ownership, supplier consolidation and spend leverage to reduce complexity and improve overall value.
  • Support effective contract lifecycle management, including post-award governance, supplier performance, change management, claims and compliance.
  • Identify and mitigate supplier, commercial, contractual, capacity and market risks.
  • Build strong relationships with Operations, Projects, Credit, Legal, Engineering and other stakeholders, enabling earlier Supply Chain involvement and improved forward planning.
  • Use spend, supplier and procurement data to identify opportunities, manage risk and support data-driven decision making.
  • Develop meaningful SCM performance measures and reporting across sourcing, supplier performance, compliance, savings and value creation.
  • Lead continuous improvement and support adoption of technology, automation and digital tools that improve procurement effectiveness and user experience.
  • Foster a high-performing, collaborative and accountable team culture focused on business partnership and commercial excellence.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, corporate policies, procurement governance, ethical standards and safety requirements.

ABOUT YOU

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Commerce or a related field.
  • Approximately 10+ years of progressive Supply Chain, procurement or strategic sourcing experience, including experience leading people.
  • Strong knowledge of strategic sourcing and category management, including spend analysis, market analysis, sourcing strategy development, competitive bidding and supplier negotiations.
  • Experience developing or operating Supplier Relationship Management and supplier performance management programs.
  • Strong understanding of procurement governance, policies, controls and sourcing best practices.
  • Strong commercial and negotiation skills, with experience in contract development, competitive bidding and supplier negotiations.
  • Ability to think strategically while remaining comfortable working directly on complex sourcing, supplier and operational matters.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build credibility and influence stakeholders at multiple levels of the organization.
  • Strong business acumen and an understanding of how Supply Chain decisions affect cost, risk, operational performance and enterprise value.
  • Experience working within a complex operational, industrial, energy or asset-heavy environment would be considered an asset.
