Job Description
CSMC is in search of a Process Engineer with expertise in chemical processing and analytical lab experience. This unique role is central to our mission, blending lunar resource extraction with transformative terrestrial applications. Under the guidance of the Exec. VP and Chief Scientist, you will be instrumental in developing / testing processes and technologies that are viable in the lunar environment and have significant applications in improving sustainability and efficiency in terrestrial mining and materials processing.
Main Responsibilities
- Design and optimise chemical processing techniques for lunar resource extraction, with a keen eye on adaptability for terrestrial mining applications.
- Test and refine protocols for extracting usable resources, such as oxygen or metals, from lunar regolith through ISRU (In-Situ Resource Utilisation) techniques.
- Assist in the development and validation of novel analytical methods for characterising regolith properties.
- Conduct research, simulations, and prototyping to advance ISRU processes pushing the envelope in both space and terrestrial applications.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including planetary scientists, astronauts, chemical engineers, and project managers, to advance research goals.
- Manage project timelines, resources, and deliverables, ensuring the successful transition of technologies from concept to practical application.
- Document and communicate technological developments, challenges, and strategic insights through detailed reports and presentations to stakeholders.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs to ensure equipment remains in optimal working condition.
- Process and prepare lunar regolith simulants and actual extraterrestrial samples for analysis.
- Adhere to laboratory safety standards, including handling hazardous materials and working
- with vacuum and high-temperature equipment.
Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field, with a focus on additive manufacturing and chemical processing.At least 1-2 years of experience in process engineering, with significant exposure to additive manufacturing and the development of sustainable processes.Proven experience in handling complex laboratory instruments and working with gases.Demonstrated ability to follow and adapt standard operating procedures (SOPs) for samplepreparation and testing.Proficiency in data collection, statistical analysis, and reporting, using tools like MATLAB, R, or Python.Knowledge of cleanroom protocols, particularly for handling sensitive extraterrestrial materials.Demonstrated ability to innovate and develop technologies with applications in extreme environments, such as space, and transfer those technologies to terrestrial applications.Strong project management skills, with experience in leading cross-disciplinary projects from ideation to implementation.Exceptional communication abilities, capable of effectively articulating complex technical information to a diverse audience.A creative and resourceful mindset, with a commitment to addressing global challenges through innovative engineering solutions.Additional Requirements
