This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join a new residential construction company, RH Residential, at the ground floor. The successful candidate will be hands-on in managing every aspect of the accounting function — from job cost control and financial reporting to system setup and lender relations. As the business expands, this role will evolve to include building and leading an internal accounting team, shaping the department’s structure, processes, and culture.
OVERVIEW
A key partner to the President, the Controller will play a key leadership role in establishing and managing the financial operations of a newly formed residential home building company. This position will be responsible for building the company’s accounting framework from the ground up, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with all regulatory requirements. The Controller will work closely with leadership and operations to manage financial accounting, reporting, invoicing, budgeting, forecasting, banking, and project financial reporting functions.
KEY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- With the President, develop and drive the execution of the finance strategy aligned with the overall Company’s vision
- Champion the implementation of accounting and job cost software
- Streamline financial processes to support efficiency and scalability
- Support strategic decision-making with financial insights and reporting
- Develop budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections; monitor variances and provide analysis
- Oversee job costing for all residential projects, ensuring accurate tracking of labor, materials, subcontractors and overhead
- Monitor construction budgets and margins; identify cost overruns and risk areas
- Work closely with project management and operations to improve cost controls
- Oversee accounts payable, subcontractor payments, lien releases, and vendor compliance
- Monitor cash flow to ensure sufficient liquidity for ongoing construction activities
- Manage the accounting operations, including the review of journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable and reporting
- Establish and monitor internal controls to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal regulatory and company policies and procedures
- Prepare financial and operational reports, including monthly, quarterly and year end financials, statements and detailed reporting packages
- Partner with operations, sales, and estimating teams to ensure financial data integrity and operational alignment.
- Recruit and manage future accounting staff, provide coaching, training and guidance to ensure employees understand their job expectations, receive feedback to enhance overall capabilities of the team
- Monitor all financial accounts and conduct review procedures over AP, AR, tenant statements, account reconciliations, bank reconciliations and GST returns
- Ensure proper application of accounting rules (ASPE) and compliance with income and commodity tax
- Calculate and report Year End Operating Cost reconciliations for tenants
- Manage banking relationships, lender compliance, and covenant reporting.
- Conduct ad hoc financial analysis
- Assist President with other financial / accounting projects as needed
REQUIREMENTS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS)
Bachelor’s Degree in Finance / Accounting combined with a CA / CPA designation is requiredMinimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in residential construction or real estate development.Strong knowledge of Canadian construction accounting, job costing, WIP, and revenue recognitionExperience setting up accounting systems and processes in start-up or growing organizationsProficiency with homebuilding ERP systems such as, BuildPro / Brix, Sage 300 Construction, BuilderMT, or Constellation products.Advanced Excel skills and an interest in building scalable financial models and reporting tools.Knowledge of relevant regulatory compliances regarding financial reporting and recordsProficient with MS Office with advanced skills in ExcelHands-on, adaptable, and comfortable in growing entrepreneurial environmentStrong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projectsHigh level of integrity, professionalism, and accountabilityCollaborative and solutions-oriented, with the ability to work effectively with operations and leadershipFlexible and adaptable to changing work demandsDemonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environmentWorking Environment
