Job description
6ixDesign Inc. is a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering practice based in Toronto. We work across low-rise and mid-rise residential, multiplex, commercial, mixed-use, and institutional projects, carrying them from early feasibility through permit, tender, and construction. What sets us apart is structural: architecture and engineering sit under one roof, so coordination happens down the hall instead of across three firms and a two-week email chain. As our project volume grows, we are looking for technologists who take pride in a well-built set of drawings.

Why 6ixDesign? Growth: We are expanding our architectural department, and we promote from within. Technologists here take on more scope as they demonstrate they can carry it, not after a fixed number of years.

Integrated Practice: Our architectural and engineering teams share models and drawings and resolve issues internally. You will learn how structural, mechanical, and electrical decisions actually land in a set, because the people making them sit a few desks away.

Real Mentorship: You will work directly with our Architectural Manager and principals on live projects, with drawing reviews that explain the why, not just the redline. We actively support BCIN qualification and the path to OAA licensure.

Beautiful Workspace: Our office is designed the way we design for our clients. It is a space built to support focused, collaborative work.

Competitive Salary: We recognize and reward the value that each team member brings to the table. Our compensation packages reflect our dedication to attracting and retaining strong people.

Job Description:

As an Architectural Technologist, you are responsible for the drawings. You will produce and coordinate permit, construction, and tender documentation across residential, multiplex, mixed-use, and institutional projects, working from design intent through to a complete, code-compliant, buildable set. Reporting to the Architectural Manager and working closely with the principals, you will model in Revit, resolve detailing, check your own work against the Ontario Building Code and applicable zoning by-laws, and coordinate with our in-house engineering teams and external consultants. This is a production role with real technical depth, suited to someone who wants to understand how a building goes together rather than simply draw what they are handed.

Key Responsibilities:

Drawing Production:

Produce and revise architectural drawing sets in Revit and AutoCAD across all phases, from schematic design and design development through permit, construction documentation, and tender.

Permit Documentation:

Prepare complete building permit packages, including code matrices, zoning compliance summaries, spatial separation and limiting distance calculations, and the supporting documentation municipalities require.

Code and Zoning Review:

Check drawings against the Ontario Building Code, applicable zoning by-laws, accessibility requirements, and energy compliance paths, and flag conflicts early rather than at plan review.

Detailing:

Develop wall, roof, floor, foundation, window, door, stair, and guard details that are constructible, correctly sequenced, and consistent with the assemblies scheduled elsewhere in the set.

Building Science:

Apply sound thermal, air barrier, vapour control, and water management principles in assembly design, and coordinate with SB-10 or SB-12 energy compliance requirements.

BIM and Model Management:

Build and maintain Revit models to office standards, including families, sheets, view templates, worksets, and shared parameters, keeping the model clean and usable by the whole team.

Consultant Coordination:

Coordinate architectural drawings against structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and landscape backgrounds, and track and resolve clashes and open items.

Schedules and Specifications:

Prepare and maintain door, window, room finish, and assembly schedules, and assist in developing project specifications and outline specifications.

Municipal Submissions:

Support site plan approval, committee of adjustment, minor variance, and zoning review submissions, and prepare responses to municipal comments and examiner deficiency notices.

Construction Administration:

Assist in responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings and submittals, preparing site instructions and change documentation, and issuing revised drawings.

Site Reviews:

Attend site reviews with senior staff, record observations, take field measurements, and document existing conditions for renovation and addition projects.

Quality Control:

Self-check every set before issue for coordination, drawing consistency, notation accuracy, and completeness, and participate in internal QA reviews.

Standards and Templates:

Contribute to the development and upkeep of office BIM standards, title blocks, detail libraries, and drawing production workflows.

Mentorship:

Support and check the work of junior technologists, co-op students, and interns as your experience grows.

Must Have Qualifications:

Three-year diploma in Architectural Technology, or a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from a recognized institution.

Approximately 3 to 6 years of experience producing architectural documentation in a practice setting, including at least 2 years of Canadian experience.

Demonstrated ability to produce a complete permit and construction document set with limited supervision.

Working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, including both Part 9 and Part 3 applications.

Familiarity with Ontario municipal zoning by-laws, permit processes, and site plan approval requirements.

Strong Revit skills at production level, including families, sheet set-up, view templates, and worksets.

Proficiency in AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.

Solid understanding of building assemblies, construction sequencing, and detailing conventions.

Ability to read and coordinate structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and landscape drawings.

Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and tight deadlines in a fast-paced studio.

Excellent written and verbal communication in English, which is the working language of the office.

Legally entitled to work in Canada.

Preferred Qualifications:

BCIN registration with qualifications in House, Small Buildings, Large Buildings, Building Structural, or Legal Process.

OAA Intern Architect status or active progress toward licensure.

Experience with Toronto and GTA approvals, including committee of adjustment and site plan control.

Experience with multiplex, missing-middle, or purpose-built rental housing typologies.

Familiarity with the Toronto Green Standard, SB-10 and SB-12 compliance paths, or utility incentive programs such as Enbridge Savings by Design.

Experience with encapsulated mass timber, prefabricated, or panelized construction.

Working knowledge of SketchUp, Rhino, Enscape or Twinmotion, Photoshop, and InDesign for visualization and presentation.

Exposure to Dynamo, Revit family authoring, or BIM standards development.

Experience working alongside in-house or closely integrated engineering teams.

Personal Qualities:

Detail-oriented:

You catch the dimension that does not close and the detail that contradicts the section before anyone else does.

Self-checking:

You review your own work before it goes up for review, and you learn from redlines rather than repeating them.

Curious:

You want to know why an assembly is built the way it is, not just how to draw it.

Proactive:

You raise questions and conflicts early rather than drawing around them.

Organized:

You keep files, models, and revisions in order, and you can pick up someone else's project without losing a day.

Collaborative:

You communicate clearly with engineers, consultants, and colleagues, and you take direction well.

Composed:

You hold accuracy and consistency under deadline pressure.

What We Offer:

Competitive compensation aligned with experience and demonstrated ability.

Paid vacation and statutory holidays.

Direct mentorship from the Architectural Manager and principals on live projects.

Support for BCIN qualification and OAA licensure, including exam and registration fees.

Continuing education and professional development support.

A varied portfolio across residential, multiplex, mixed‑use, commercial, and institutional work.

Exposure to in‑house engineering on every project.

A modern, well‑designed studio and a supportive, collaborative atmosphere.

A clear path to increased project responsibility as the architectural department expands.

If this sounds like the job and the place for you, we would love to hear from you. Join our team as an Architectural Technologist and put your name on drawings that get built.

6ixDesign Inc. is an equal‑opportunity employer. We are committed to building a team that reflects the communities we design for, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other protected ground.
