Job description
About the Role

This position is responsible for protection and controls engineering for greenfield and brownfield substations, switching stations, and grid interconnections. The role includes protection philosophies, fault and coordination studies, relay settings and logic, detailed P&C design, SCADA and telecommunications interfaces, AC and DC systems, testing, commissioning, and energization support. In this role, you’ll serve as a technical lead, directing P&C design from concept and FEED through issued-for-construction documentation, panel fabrication, field implementation, testing, commissioning, and project closeout. At Juno, we empower our team to drive sustainable progress across power generation, renewable energy, and advanced industrial projects. With over 40 years of engineering excellence, we foster a collaborative, forward-thinking culture where your expertise in protection and controls will strengthen the safety, reliability, and resilience of Canada’s power system. ________________________________________ Key Responsibilities

Protection Engineering and System Design

Develop protection philosophies, design bases, and schemes for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breakers, feeders, capacitor or reactor banks, generation, and utility interconnections. Perform or review short-circuit studies, CT and VT selection, protection coordination, relay settings, logic equations, and calculation or settings reports. Evaluate system operating requirements, interconnection criteria, utility standards, equipment duty, redundancy, communications-assisted schemes, and failure modes. Detailed Protection and Controls Design

Develop and review P&C single-line diagrams, AC and DC schematics, logic diagrams, wiring diagrams, control-panel layouts, cable schedules, I/O lists, point assignments, and equipment interconnection drawings. Design or review station-service AC and DC systems, battery and charger requirements, DC distribution, control-building interfaces, relay panels, RTU and SCADA interfaces, and telecommunications requirements. Prepare specifications, bills of materials, data sheets, panel requirements, and vendor-document reviews for protective relays, control systems, metering, annunciation, and communications equipment. Project Delivery and Technical Leadership

Lead P&C scope from concept and FEED through detailed design, including design bases, engineering standards, estimates, schedules, resource plans, scopes of work, and issued-for-construction packages. Coordinate with substation physical, civil, structural, SCADA, telecommunications, system studies, operations, testing, commissioning, utility, client, and vendor teams. Maintain control of technical quality, budget, schedule, interfaces, and change; provide clear status reporting and timely escalation of project risks. Support proposals, client presentations, technical evaluations, and the development of long-term utility and energy-sector relationships. Field, Testing, and Commissioning Support

Develop or review testing and commissioning requirements and support factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, relay testing, functional testing, outage planning, and energization. Provide senior field support for troubleshooting, settings implementation, redline control, cutovers, deficiency resolution, record drawings, and project closeout. Quality, Safety, and Team Development

Authenticate engineering deliverables within professional competency and ensure compliance with applicable IEEE, IEC, CSA, Canadian Electrical Code, utility, reliability, and client requirements. Apply safety-in-design, operability, cybersecurity, redundancy, maintainability, and lifecycle-risk principles throughout the design. Lead independent and interdisciplinary reviews, mentor engineers and designers, and develop P&C standards, templates, calculation tools, and quality-control practices. Qualifications

Education and Licensure

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution. Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta or another Canadian province and eligible for registration with APEGA. Experience

10+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience, with substantial responsibility for high-voltage substation protection and controls design. Demonstrated experience developing protection philosophies, performing coordination or settings work, and producing detailed P&C design packages. Experience supporting panel fabrication, utility review, field testing, commissioning, brownfield cutovers, outages, or energization. Technical Skills

Advanced knowledge of protection schemes, microprocessor-based relays, CT and VT circuits, AC and DC control systems, breaker control, interlocking, metering, SCADA, telecommunications, and substation automation. Experience with protection-analysis software such as ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, ETAP, SKM, or equivalent, and relay-vendor tools for SEL, GE, Siemens, Hitachi Energy or ABB equipment. Proficiency with AutoCAD and Bluebeam and strong capability in technical writing, calculation review, settings documentation, and client communication. Experience with IEC 61850, digital substations, redundant network architectures, RTU or gateway configuration, or utility telecommunications. Familiarity with AESO, WECC, NERC, or utility reliability and cybersecurity requirements applicable to Western Canadian power systems. Experience with transmission-connected generation, renewable energy, battery energy storage, industrial substations, or major grid interconnections. Success in This Role Will Require

Deep protection-engineering judgement and disciplined attention to selectivity, dependability, security, redundancy, and operability. Ability to translate complex system requirements into clear settings, logic, drawings, test requirements, and field-ready design packages. Strong client-facing communication, technical leadership, mentoring, quality-control, and commissioning-support capabilities. A collaborative spirit aligned with Juno’s values of Connect, Cultivate, Create. Location & Travel

This position is based in Calgary, Alberta, with flexible work arrangements available. Applicants must be able to work full-time in Canada and be available for periodic multi-day travel to client offices, substations, panel shops, vendor facilities, and project sites across Western Canada. ________________________________________ Benefits

Competitive salary, performance-based bonuses, and profit-sharing program. Comprehensive health benefits and group retirement savings program. Continuous professional development, mentorship, and training. Engaging team-building events and a supportive, inclusive work culture. For over 40 years, Juno Engineering Canada has been at the forefront of delivering innovative, sustainable engineering solutions across the energy and infrastructure sectors. Our people-driven approach—centered on collaboration, continuous improvement, and a commitment to excellence—ensures that every project not only meets but exceeds expectations.
