Job description
One of our major clients is looking for a Process/Utilities Engineer to join their team on a 1-year contract in Kitimat, BC.

About the role: The role provides technical support to Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and HSSE teams to help maintain safe and reliable operations. Responsibilities include monitoring plant performance, supporting troubleshooting activities, performing engineering calculations and analyses, investigating process issues, and contributing to root-cause investigations. The engineer will assist in maintaining operating envelopes for hydrocarbon facilities, water treatment systems, cooling water systems, potable water systems, and other utility infrastructure.

The position supports maintenance and turnaround activities by providing engineering input for equipment inspections, membrane replacement programs, chemical cleaning activities, solvent management, system reinstatement, and performance assessments. The role also contributes to the development and implementation of corrective actions aimed at improving plant reliability, efficiency, and safety.

In addition to supporting day-to-day operations, the engineer participates in brownfield projects and facility modifications by contributing technical evaluations, engineering studies, and design development activities. This includes assisting with feasibility assessments, data gathering, technical documentation, and the preparation of engineering deliverables under the guidance of more experienced engineers.

The role involves supporting the performance of water and wastewater treatment systems, refrigerant and condensate handling facilities, and LNG loading operations. The engineer will develop knowledge of water chemistry principles, operational constraints, equipment performance, and process optimization techniques while working closely with Operations and Engineering teams.

The engineer will utilize process monitoring, simulation, and digital tools to analyze plant performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and support operational decision-making. The role also participates in process safety activities including HAZOPs, risk assessments, safeguarding reviews, and other assurance processes to help maintain the integrity of company's facilities.

This position offers a strong development path within Process and Utilities Technology, providing opportunities to build technical expertise, develop engineering judgment, and gain experience across a wide range of LNG and utility systems. The role reports to the Head of Process & Utility Systems and works closely with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams to support operational excellence and continuous improvement.

To succeed with us in Technology organization, we need your enthusiasm to:

Demonstrate deep appreciation and commitment towards technical safety.

Display a strong positive attitude to manage change and improvement in our dynamic processes, ways of working and our overall performance as we evolve into a fully operating asset.

Always display strategic thinking in developing technical systems where tactical short-term decisions and constraints to (efficient) production are harnessed into ‘eternal learning loops’ mindset to develop and implement sustainable plans for LNG delivery to markets.

Develop strong working relationships within and outside your team, stakeholders to boost co-operation and a One Team approach transcending into multi-disciplinary delivery.

Utilize flexible and innovative thinking with well-developed problem-solving skills.

Having courage to hold strong to views when challenged or challenging others with clear value drivers to preserve long-term asset value.

Maintain a pragmatic ‘can-do’, ‘be there’ and ‘showing up’ approach and support other Asset functions in making sound business decisions during the streamlining and stabilization phases.

You will use your expertise to:

Support the monitoring and performance improvement of common hydrocarbon facilities and utility systems, working closely with senior engineers and licensors such as APCI, Linde, and Veolia.

Contribute to system surveillance and performance monitoring activities through the development and maintenance of dashboards, reports, and data visualization tools.

Assist in maintaining the technical integrity of utilities, storage, and loading systems by providing engineering analysis and technical support to Operations and Engineering teams.

Participate in process safety activities including PSAs, HAZOPs, Bowties, and LOPAs, while supporting the tracking and closeout of actions through the Management of Change (MOC) process.

Support common facilities and utilities reliability initiatives through performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and implementation of improvement opportunities, while ensuring compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.

Contribute to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of water and utility infrastructure management plans.

Analyze process data and performance trends to identify emerging issues, support root cause investigations, and recommend improvement opportunities.

Interface with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, HSSE, and external stakeholders to support the safe and reliable operation of utilities and hydrocarbon systems.

Participate in incident investigations by gathering data, performing analyses, and supporting the identification of root causes and corrective actions.

Support maintenance and turnaround planning and execution through engineering assessments, technical reviews, and field support activities.

Contribute to brownfield projects and facility modifications by supporting engineering studies, technical evaluations, design development, and commissioning activities.

To be successful, you will have:

Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Hydrocarbon, Process, Utilities, or Water Treatment Engineering.

3-8 years of experience in process, utilities, or production engineering within the oil and gas, LNG, petrochemical, refining, power, or water treatment industries.

Understanding of process engineering fundamentals, mass and energy balances, unit operations, and process safety principles.

Exposure to operating facilities, engineering projects, or plant support activities, with LNG experience considered an advantage.

Working knowledge of utilities systems such as water treatment, cooling water, wastewater treatment, storage, loading, or other common facilities systems.

Familiarity with process safety processes including MOC, HAZOP, risk assessments, and incident investigations.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret process data and recommend practical solutions.

Experience using process engineering tools, data analytics platforms, simulation software, or digital monitoring applications.

Understanding of environmental and regulatory requirements applicable to industrial facilities is considered an asset.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

A proactive learning mindset with a desire to build technical expertise across LNG, hydrocarbon processing, utilities, and water systems.

Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) registration, Engineer-in-Training (EIT) status, or eligibility for registration in Canada is considered an advantage.

This role requires that you:

Be legally entitled to work in Canada (i.e., by way of Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or valid work permit)

Move to live and work in beautiful Kitimat, BC.

Work an office -hours schedule, approximately 40 hrs./week, 5 days per week, with flexibility to balance off time hours as well as accommodate extended schedules when required during critical plant transients.
