The Team Lead, AV Infrastructure provides leadership in the design, engineering, and supporting infrastructure of audiovisual (AV) systems across the Faculty of Medicine’s provincially distributed education environment. The incumbent leads the AV Infrastructure & Design team, ensuring that AV solutions are scalable, supportable, and aligned with institutional standards, program requirements, and long‑term sustainability. The team also serves as the escalation point for Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support, providing advanced troubleshooting, break/fix resolution, and subject matter expertise for complex AV system issues. The Team Lead, AV Infrastructure is responsible for developing AV design standards, engineering frameworks, system architectures, and technical specifications that support new implementations and renewal initiatives. The role provides advanced technical guidance for AV systems design and infrastructure planning, and integration, working closely with AV Projects and AV Operations to ensure designs are implementable, supportable, and effectively integrated across FoM’s distributed learning environments, including university campuses and clinical sites in partnership with health authorities. The Team Lead collaborates closely with internal teams, UBC IT, health authority partners, and vendors to ensure AV designs integrate effectively with existing infrastructure, security requirements, and enterprise technologies. The position also manages and mentors staff in the day‑to‑day performance of work, contributes to strategic planning and resource development, and provides technical leadership across AV infrastructure, engineering, and design‑related product and service lines. The UBC Vancouver Campus is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. This position sits within the Faculty of Medicine Digital Solutions department, in the Collaboration team that provides synchronous (real time) and asynchronous technology solutions to enable the Faculty of Medicine to meet its mandate, particularly the provincially distributed medical education program. The Faculty of Medicine is provincial in its education and service mandates and is national and international in stature in its research programs. As such, Faculty, staff, researchers and students require the ability to meet in a live, synchronous manner using voice and video, and require the ability to share content. The role works closely with other Digital Solutions units in delivering AV/IT services and liaises between external business units, consultants, and partners that assist in delivering AV/IT services across the province of British Columbia. This role reports to the Associate Director, Research & Core Technology on daily project and operational tasks. Work Performed Specific Duties:
Leads the design and engineering of FoM audiovisual (AV) systems and supporting infrastructure across academic campuses, clinical sites, health authority environments, and distributed learning locations. Develops and maintains AV design standards, system architectures, and technical specifications to guide new implementations, upgrades, and lifecycle renewal initiatives. Defines technical requirements for AV systems, including infrastructure dependencies, enterprise integrations, network considerations, and site‑specific environmental and security needs. Works closely with AV Projects to ensure designs are clearly defined, feasible, and aligned with delivery approaches, timelines, site constraints, and procurement requirements. Collaborates with AV Operations to ensure systems are supportable, maintainable, and aligned with operational service models, including providing guidance and escalation support for complex issues. Owns Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support for AV systems, overseeing escalation, advanced troubleshooting, and break/fix resolution for complex issues. Partners with UBC IT, UBC AV, health authorities, and external vendors to ensure effective integration with network infrastructure, enterprise systems, and site‑specific requirements. Leads clinical stakeholder management by integrating Health Authority technical requirements into overall AV designs, ensuring seamless interoperability across organizations, and collaborating closely with Health Authority AV infrastructure teams. Evaluates vendor proposals and technical solutions, providing recommendations on system design, equipment selection, and implementation approaches based on performance, cost, risk, and supportability. Produces and maintains design documentation, including system diagrams and specifications, to support procurement, implementation, and operational support, and lifecycle management. Provides technical leadership and mentorship, and contributes to the continuous improvement of AV design practices, standards, and support models. Core Duties:

Works with staff, project teams and other service providers to manage and coordinate work efforts. Ensures all resources understand and follow appropriate methods, procedures and techniques to successfully complete assigned tasks within committed timeframes and standards. Provides input into staff performance assessments, learning and development requirements, and recognition and reward recommendations. Provides career planning advice to staff and creates development plans to help staff achieve their career goals including assigning work which leverages their skills and capabilities and provides them with opportunities for learning. Develops and implements procedures, methods, standards and controls to foster operational efficiency, monitor compliance, and mitigate risks to achieve team results. Performs the more complex elements of the work, applying an advanced level of technical expertise and judgement to achieve desired work outcomes. Leads or participates in the selection and negotiation of vendor contracts. Must serve as a Project Manager on projects and would be responsible for the overall management and success of the project. Responsible for product expertise which would include development of new systems, acquisition of new software or hardware packages, changes and enhancements. Maintains appropriate professional designations and up‑to‑date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools. Performs other related duties as required. Work requires judgment and initiative. Errors could have a significant impact on the continued functioning of the MED Programs curriculum data and video networks with subsequent effects on Medical School Accreditation and future finance. Supervision, guidance, and instruction will be provided primarily to the VFMP team, including staff, students, and contracted IT personnel. Provides functional supervision to distributed/partner AV staff to support Faculty of Medicine’s distributed education program. Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. In‑depth knowledge of applications and the business requirements supporting them. Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. University degree in Computer Science preferred. Formal training in audio‑visual service management and support (i.e. industry training, seminars, associated credentials, such as Cisco Certification; Crestron Certification) preferred. Formal training in Project management and Business Analysis and a strong understanding of the project life cycle preferred. A minimum of 5 years of experience, in‑depth knowledge of applications and the business requirements supporting them or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
