Job description

The Chief Power Engineer provides regulatory, technical and operational leadership for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Hangingstone Expansion and Demo SAGD facilities. The role is accountable for compliance with the Safety Codes Act, the Power Engineers Regulation and applicable ABSA requirements, and for identifying and leading operational optimization opportunities, operational discipline and technical oversight across all crews and shifts.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Chief Power Engineer works closely with the field leadership team, to connect regulatory and operating requirements with day-to-day asset execution. The role partners across Operations, Maintenance, Planning and Scheduling, Projects, Engineering, Asset Integrity and HSE to prioritize work across the asset, improve productivity, reliability, efficiency, and reinforce a One Greenfire culture.

This is a site-based rotational position at Greenfire’s Hangingstone Expansion and Demo SAGD facilities in northern Alberta.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Regulatory Leadership and Plant Governance

  • Serve as the Greenfire Resources Hangingstone Expansion and Demo facility designated Chief Power Engineer and fulfil the responsibilities assigned to the role under applicable Alberta legislation, regulations and ABSA requirements.
  • Maintain plant registrations, operating records, logbooks, certificate information, supervision arrangements and other documentation required to demonstrate compliant operation.
  • Establish and maintain operating standards, approved procedures, operating limits, emergency and shutdown practices, alarm-management expectations and other controls required for safe and compliant operation.
  • Verify that each operating shift has the required qualified and competent personnel, appropriate supervision and effective contingency coverage for absences, vacancies and emergency situations.

Operations Supervisor Partnership and 24-Hour Operational Leadership

  • Work with the Operations Manager and Operations Supervisors to maintain consistent operating strategies, priorities, standards and handovers across crews, shifts and assets.
  • Establish the competency framework for power engineers, control room operators and field operators, and ensure competency assessments, progression decisions and sign-offs are rigorous, consistent and properly documented.
  • Support Operations Supervisors in developing panel operators.
  • Partner with the Operations Supervisors to strengthen scope readiness, procedure and document reviews, team scheduling, operational follow-up and productive use of nightshift resources.

Operational Performance and Discipline

  • Set expectations for safe, reliable and efficient operation of steam generation, water treatment, bitumen production, well pads, and utilities equipment, and monitor performance against approved operating plans.
  • Partner with Operations leadership to improve production, reliability, operating cost and equipment performance through disciplined use of operating data and field observations.
  • Maintain a strong field presence, review shift and plant logbooks, verify operating rounds and investigate significant deviations, process upsets, recurring alarms and operating-practice gaps.
  • Lead or support operating incident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions and organisational learning, and ensure lessons are incorporated into procedures, training and operating practices.

One Greenfire Execution, Maintenance and Planning

  • Partner with the Maintenance Manager, Planning and Scheduling resources and Operations Supervisors to prioritise work across the asset and ensure scopes, permits, isolations, equipment access and operating support are ready for efficient execution.
  • Support the effective use of maintenance resources, including appropriate operational leadership of nightshift work when required.
  • Provide Operations input to regulatory preventive-maintenance plans, shutdowns, turnarounds and integrated long-range plans, balancing production, maintenance, integrity and project priorities.
  • Work with Projects, Engineering, Chief Inspector, and HSE on management of change, design reviews, hazard assessments, commissioning, start-up, facility troubleshooting and handover of new or modified systems.
  • Support an organization that can scale with future development by establishing repeatable operating systems, clear accountabilities, succession plans and practical resource models.
  • Participate in operating-budget development, cost control, contractor strategy and performance reporting, and communicate material risks, constraints and opportunities to site and executive leadership.

People, Culture and Capability

  • Provide technical coaching and development support to power engineers and operating personnel, building leadership depth, technical capability and succession readiness across the organization.
  • Ensure training programmes, operating procedures and competency records remain current, fit for purpose and aligned with regulatory requirements and facility needs.
  • Promote a One Greenfire mentality by encouraging decisions based on overall asset value rather than individual crews, departments or shifts.
  • Build trusted relationships across Operations and Maintenance and model visible safety leadership, professional judgement, respectful challenge and accountability.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILL SET:

  • Valid Alberta First Class Power Engineer Certificate of Competency, or Second Class Power Engineer Certificate of Competency with proven progress and a finite timeline determined towards obtaining a First Class Power Engineering Certificate of Competency.
  • 10 or more years of progressive operating experience in SAGD, thermal heavy oil, refining, petrochemical, power generation or another comparable heavy-industrial facility, including at least five years in an operations leadership role.
  • Substantial SAGD or in-situ operating experience, including steam generation, water treatment, production operations, utilities and pressure-equipment systems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading 24-hour operations, multi-shift teams, operator competency programmes, operational discipline and performance management.
  • Strong control-room and plant-process knowledge, with proven ability to troubleshoot complex operating issues and make timely, risk-informed decisions.
  • Experience supporting maintenance planning, turnarounds, management of change, commissioning, start-up and integrated asset planning.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, planning, business judgment and computer skills, with the ability to influence field personnel, technical specialists and senior leaders.

WHY GREENFIRE?

Greenfire Resources is a Canadian energy company focused on the safe, responsible and efficient development of its oil sands assets. This role offers the opportunity to directly influence the reliability, performance and long-term value of Greenfire’s SAGD operations in a highly accountable owner-operator environment.
