Job description
Our Human Resources Department is currently accepting applications for the permanent full-time position of

Fire Prevention Officer.

Reporting directly to the Fire Chief, the Fire Prevention Officer enforces fire and life safety requirements by conducting comprehensive fire prevention surveys and inspections of all classes of buildings and occupancies. The Fire Prevention Officer will act as an Assistant to the Fire Marshal under the provisions of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act and participate in fire safety education programs for internal and external clients. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications: Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent, required. Advanced Diploma in Fire Inspection and Fire Safety Education or Post-Secondary education in Fire Protection Technology in the field of fire protection or related discipline, considered an asset. Minimum five (5) years’ experience as a full-time Fire Prevention Officer. NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I and II, required. NFPA 1021 Fire Officer and NFPA 1041 Instructor considered an asset. NFPA 1033 Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator, required. Certifications in NFPA 1035 Standard on Fire and Life Safety Educator, Public Information Officer, Youth Fire-setter Intervention Specialist and Youth Fire-setter Program Manager Professional Qualifications, and NFPA 921, Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations considered an asset NFPA 1001 Firefighter, considered an asset. NFPA 1002 Pump Operations, considered an asset. Must be willingto complete any courses necessary as part of the Provincial Fire Prevention (NFPA) Certification process, and required courses under the Ontario Building Code, within the first three years of employment. Must have an excellent working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, NFPA, ULC, CSA, and other applicable codes, standards and regulations. Knowledge of the technical aspects of fire protection and life safety systems including, but not limited to, fire alarm, voice communication, sprinkler, hose and standpipe, emergency lighting and power, fire pumps, water supply and fire suppression systems, fire fighters’ elevators, smoke control measures, the storage, use and handling of dangerous goods, hazardous processes and activities, storage configurations of commodities, as well as building construction and occupant types. Knowledge of Ontario Fire and Building Codes and other fire protection standards, codes, and regulations coupled with an understanding of technical and operational aspects of sprinkler, standpipe, fire alarm and voice communication systems, hazardous materials, and other factors relating to fire protection. Experience with Part 9 inspections, including Rooming, Boarding and Lodging, considered an asset. Experienced in conducting inspections, the ability to interpret building construction, design drawings and experience in the delivery of educational programs are valuable assets. Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, including but not limited to: the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, National Fire Protection Association standards, etc. Strong knowledge of modern firefighting, related emergency services and fire prevention methods, techniques and procedures and the operation and maintenance of apparatus and equipment. Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish effective working relationships with excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to work independently and undertake self-directed tasks when necessary and as part of a team as required. Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify problems and troubleshoot, and able to implement solutions with the ability to make good judgements and sound decisions. Ability to react quickly, remain calm and clearly communicate concise and accurate information, under stressful, intense or highly emotional situations. Ability to acquire and retain knowledge of the County’s geographic area and surrounding area, including nearby fire halls, streets, buildings, water supply and fire hydrants, current road closures, construction or critical weather conditions. Ability to work rotational on-call responsibilities with other staff for fire scene investigation. Willingness to attend any other relevant courses/training required for the performance of his/her duties. Valid First Aid Training & CPR certificate; EFR or instructor certification considered an asset. Strong level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, Sharepoint) required. FirePro data entry considered an asset. Valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License and satisfactory Driver’s Abstract. Valid Class “D” with Z endorsement considered an asset. Ability to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check. The annual salary range for this position is $98,206.33 to $122,757.92 as per the current wage schedule of the IAFF Local 2745 Collective Agreement.
