The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales with over 170 academic, research and professional staff. In 2025, the school obtained $22M in research funding, produced over 800 scientific publications and is frequently rated among the top schools across UNSW in student experience surveys. The School incorporates a broad range of disciplines, enabling comprehensive education and research in the broad fields of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Climate Science, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Marine Science and Oceanography. The Senior Lecturer will contribute to high-quality research, teaching, and research student supervision in the field of palaeobiology, with a focus on understanding the behaviour, ecology, and evolution of extinct species through the fossil record. This role will be expected to lead innovative research that integrates fieldwork, comparative anatomy, 3D imaging, and biomechanical modelling to uncover new fossil species and reconstruct their life histories About The Role

Level C ($155k - $178k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading Continuing Part-time (7 hours per week) Specific Responsibilities For This Role Include

Conduct original and innovative research in palaeobiology and related disciplines, independently and collaboratively and create a nationally recognised research track record. Publish in high-ranking journals, provide reports to funding bodies, and engage in public communication of research outcomes. Attract peer recognition and establish research network/s (based on the norms of the discipline) at national level. Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants (and/or research fellowships) and research end-users as a member or leader, at or above the level that is relevant to the discipline in leading universities. Establish and grow research groups, participate in major collaborations, and contribute to the commercialisation of research outcomes. Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders including government, museums, industry, research centres, and universities. Mentor and guide students, groups, and colleagues; supervise HDRs to timely completion as primary supervisor; and contribute to HDR review panels. Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and critically reflective practice to inspire student learning. Design, develop and deliver high-quality learning activities, assessments and feedback across undergraduate and postgraduate courses, using diverse approaches and digital platforms in alignment with UNSW policy. Provide leadership at School and University levels, including School meetings, open days, and strategic planning. Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values. Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others. About The Successful Applicant

(Selection Criteria) To be successful in this role you will have A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience. Significant track record in research leadership with outcomes of high quality and high international impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence and deliver research leadership. Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments. Demonstrated leadership in building engagement and partnerships with the profession and industry. Excellent record of recruiting and supervising high calibre students. Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity diversity and inclusion initiatives. Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others. Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills. An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
