Position Overview

Under the direction of the Manager Health Services, and in collaboration Nurse Educators and Clinical Nurse Specialists the primary function of the Clinical Mentor will be to act as a guide, role model, and advisor who facilitates debriefings, and shares practical, day to day, applied knowledge with other Home Care Nurses. Clinical Mentors will primarily be responsible for providing rapid, just in time clinical mentorship on the in a community setting, home care clinics, sites/units, or programs. They will also work in conjunction with Managers, Nurse Educators and Clinical Nurse Specialists to provide on-going guidance to ensure competence in the area of practice. The Clinical Mentor supports nurse(s) through a mentoring process that promotes the delivery of high-quality nursing care. The Clinical Mentor orientates, supports and promotes education and develops staff to ensure competence and ability to fulfill specified responsibilities. They support nurses to ensure a smooth transition into new areas or levels of practice and the work environment. The Clinical Mentor integrates knowledge, skills and experience to meet the clinical needs and social adjustment needs of all team members. They serve as a positive role model of excellence in professional practice, demonstrating a positive attitude and a commitment to the vision, values, and goals of the unit/facility/region, and promote an interprofessional, client/patient-centered approach to care based on best available research evidence. The incumbent fosters growth of the new or developing staff member within an effective mentoring relationship while supporting self-learning objectives.

Experience

• A minimum of three (3) years of recent clinical nursing experience, including home care nursing, medicine, surgery or applicable general acute care areas required.
• Demonstrated clinical competence and clinical skill development required.
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills required.
• Experience as a preceptor or mentor within the last three (3) years preferred.
• Demonstrated experience with effective collaboration within and between programs, agencies and services preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

• Graduate from an approved Registered Nursing Program required.
• Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred.
• Certification in Adult Education an asset.
• Completion of Wound Care Level 1 & 2 courses preferred.
• Diabetes education preferred.
• International Interprofessional Wound Care (IIWCC) course preferred.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

• Responsible to maintain and provide proof of active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) and be a member in good standing.
• Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the Employer policy.
• Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License, or equivalent from province of residence, and access to a personal vehicle to provide service is required.

Physical Requirements

• Moderate to heavy physical effort required.

This term position may end earlier as outlined in your collective agreement.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
