Job description

atchtech are working with a key client to support the recruitment of a Testing & Commissioning Engineer / Specialist – Light Rail Transit to work on high profile railway projects in Edmonton.

Location: Major Light Rail Transit Programme, Edmonton, AB

Engagement Type: Long‑term contract / project-based assignment

Duration: 1–3 years (discipline and scope dependent)

About the Opportunity

An independent rail and transit consultancy is supporting the Testing & Commissioning (T&C) phase of a major Light Rail Transit (LRT) delivery programme in Western Canada. The organisation works across large, complex rail and urban transit projects, supporting owners, contractors, designers, suppliers, and operators through systems integration, testing, commissioning, and handover.

To support this programme, multiple Testing & Commissioning Engineers and Specialists are being engaged across a broad range of rail systems disciplines. These roles form part of an integrated T&C team responsible for delivering safe, compliant, and operationally ready systems through to revenue service.

The Role

Successful candidates will be responsible for planning, executing, witnessing, and closing out Testing & Commissioning activities for one or more defined system packages. Roles will be aligned to the candidate’s technical discipline and experience and may include responsibility for single systems or integrated system groupings.

Engineers and specialists will work closely with designers, suppliers, installation contractors, systems integrators, and operations teams across all phases of the T&C lifecycle, including:

  • Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
  • Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
  • Systems Integration Testing (SIT)
  • Integrated Systems Testing
  • Trial Running and operational readiness
  • System acceptance and handover

Assignments are full‑time and site‑based for the duration of the commissioning programme.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, and maintain Testing & Commissioning documentation, including Test Plans, Test Procedures, Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), Method Statements, and Test Reports, in line with contractual requirements and system specifications.
  • Plan, coordinate, witness, and execute FAT, SAT, SIT, integrated testing, partial acceptance, and trial running activities for assigned systems.
  • Interface with vendors, designers, installation teams, systems integrators, and operations and maintenance stakeholders to sequence activities, manage interfaces, and resolve technical issues.
  • Manage test evidence, as‑built verification, snags, defects, and punch lists, ensuring full traceability from design requirements through to verified test results.
  • Support verification, deficiency resolution, system acceptance, and handover activities, including transition to operations and maintenance.
  • Contribute to handover documentation and support defect resolution throughout the warranty or defects liability period.
  • Ensure compliance with site safety, quality, configuration management, and permit‑to‑work requirements at all times.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Ability to work full‑time, on‑site in Western Canada for the duration of the assignment; eligible to work in Canada or able to obtain appropriate authorisation.
  • Minimum 4 years’ hands‑on Testing & Commissioning experience in rail, LRT, metro, transit, or similarly complex systems‑integrated infrastructure projects.
  • Proven delivery experience in at least one of the discipline groups listed above, with working knowledge of system interfaces and integration.
  • Engineering degree, engineering technologist qualification, or equivalent relevant trade, military, or operational background.
  • Strong ability to interpret technical specifications, schematics, wiring diagrams, single line diagrams, P&IDs, network drawings, and system architectures.
  • Demonstrated experience authoring and executing compliant T&C documentation and managing test evidence within a formal QA/QC and configuration management environment.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills in English.

Desirable / Advantageous

  • Exposure to system integration, interface management, operational readiness, or staged handover environments.
  • Experience with digital T&C, inspection, or requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS, Jama, Polarion, or similar).
  • Professional engineering or equivalent registration, or progression toward registration.
  • Discipline‑specific certifications (e.g. HV switching, signalling testing, telecoms commissioning).
