Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance. Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

Looking for your chance to apply your technical and journalism skills to a new, live programming team?

CBC Hamilton is hiring an experienced associate producer-technician to help us launch a new weekday morning current affairs radio program and weekly news podcast, and support the team to create compelling programming across all platforms.

The successful candidate will be experienced in both audio and video broadcasting and will embrace the fast pace and tight deadlines that come with working with a small, close-knit team on live, local programming.

For the first part of your early morning shift, you will work alongside our host and other colleagues while our morning current affairs radio program is live on-air from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. You will oversee the technical and audio production, ensuring the team has the support they need to deliver a compelling program.

During the second half of your shift, you will mix and edit audio and video material, provide technical and production support for other live, breaking or taped broadcasts across platforms, and chase and gather content as required. As such, you will be equally comfortable troubleshooting in a control room as you are choosing the best clips to use in a video for TikTok.

You will put audience needs at the centre of your work, ensuring our programming connects our audiences to the news they need to know, the stories that affect their lives and the issues that resonate in their communities. You are passionate about Hamilton and its diversity of people and viewpoints, and you champion stories from under-represented communities.

You will have a keen ear and a passion for paying attention to the details, and as such, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic and production standards are met.

You possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, are at ease with juggling multiple tasks and priorities at once and are able to troubleshoot yourself and your team out of any technical problem.

This position will generally be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 4:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. and requires full-time, on-site presence. Flexibility to work other shifts times and days will be required.

We are hiring several other jobs in our Hamilton station and in southern Ontario. You can see them all here.

Your Responsibilities

  • Operate the studio board during live programming and pre-taped segments, direct/time the program, and provide control room support for on-air staff.
  • Connect with program participants in person or virtually.
  • Edit, package, distribute and/or deliver content for audio, visual and digital platforms under tight deadlines and with high attention to detail.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold, making sure content is delivered to the appropriate platforms as quickly as possible.
  • Operate and maintain production tools and systems to provide technical support for live and taped broadcasts in the studio and in the field.
  • Assist with program lineups, updating as required.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship for all colleagues.
  • Chase and book guests and stories that reflect the day’s top local news and audience needs, and identify musical elements for programming.

Your Profile

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily multiplatform news environment.
  • Excellent technical aptitude, with control room experience in live broadcast programming.
  • Strong ability to perform a number of functions efficiently and quickly, including troubleshooting during live broadcasts.
  • Ability to set up and operate a live remote show broadcast that may include both audio and visual elements.
  • Expertise in audio and video editing.
  • Excellent knowledge of the latest broadcast gear and workflows.
  • Technical skills to package radio show content for visual platforms, as well as going live on streaming and other digital platforms for breaking news.
  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong story ideas that meet the needs of our audiences in Hamilton.
  • A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.
  • Willingness to embrace change and new tasks for storytelling across all CBC News platforms.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • University degree with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience, or graduation from a college program and five years of experience.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

This position will not be filled until consideration has been made by the CBC/CMG Local Joint Employment Committee.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
