Job description

The Role

You need to have a live NMC UK pin in order to be considered for this post. This proposal seeks to evolve CNS team to support neuro-oncology, specifically focusing on the neurological support for this patient group. Band 7 post was created from within budget 18 months ago, following the realignment of several budgets within the medical nursing establishment within INS, and will support the medical and nursing needs of the neuro-oncology patient group, the aim was always to evolve this service introducing a Band 6 to the team. The CNS will attend the neuro-oncology MDT and provide additional cover for the neurosurgical CNS’ workload, evolving this service will reduce the capacity of acute Epilepsy team that is already overstretched service with neuro oncology patients with seizure activity.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

This is permanent, full-time post of 36 hours per week. Based at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. The shift pattern is Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take and record a patient’s history including medical, family and social history, talking to the patient, relatives or other carers as appropriate. There may be significant barriers to understanding and acceptance due to sensitive or contentious information given and received.
  • Provide a comprehensive assessment of the patient using experience and knowledge to discuss management options, actively involving patients and carers to create an individualised plan of care.
  • Acts as a specialist resource for patients, carers and staff, liaising with internal and external agencies to achieve optimum, holistic patient care.
  • The post holder will organise and manage their own workload, making daily decisions regarding patient care within the scope of clinical/professional practice.
  • Organise own time in line with agreed job plan.
  • Contribute to the effective management of resources, including stores, supplies, equipment and pharmacy resources.
  • Contribute to strategic issues relating to the service and specialist area.
  • Act in a collaborative and advisory role to share knowledge and expertise to help deliver high standards of patient care.
  • Promote the development of a flexible and skilled nursing workforce.
  • Contribute to the wider corporate agenda where appropriate.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

  • Registered Nurse on the NMC Register with significant post registration nursing experience within neurology/epilepsy/neurosurgery/oncology speciality.
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm for the role and a commitment to developing specialist knowledge and skills in neuro-oncology nursing. Willing to undertake and work towards a qualification in clinical assessment and nurse prescribing (V300).
  • Experience and evidence of undertaking service evaluation, audit or project work would be advantageous in the role.
  • Possess excellent communication, empathy and counselling skills.
  • Good organisational and time management skills to prioritise workload, demonstrating ability to work autonomously within own scope of practice.
  • A commitment to lifelong learning and demonstrates evidence of continuing professional development/knowledge.
  • Successful track record in working in multi‑disciplinary team settings and promoting collaborative approaches to delivering excellent patient care.
