Job description

About Us

At Onterris, we build careers grounded in purpose, responsibility and real-world impact. “For Planet and Progress” is our north star that guides everything we do. We believe environmental responsibility and human progress are interconnected, interwoven and international. Our scientists, engineers, field teams, consultants and professionals collaborate across disciplines and geographies, guiding industries and governments, ensuring that communities and environments thrive. When you join us, you’re not just forging a career, you’re joining a movement. A movement for better thinking, smarter solutions and lasting impact. Together, we will advance our way of life and protect the integrity of our environment every step of the way.

As a Senior Remediation, Reclamation Specialist in our Alberta offices, you will be responsible for assisting multiple projects where you will have increasing interaction with our multi-disciplinary staff, regulatory agencies and clients. You will be part of a strong team of committed professionals.

The compensation range for this role is $120,000 to $170,000, commensurate with experience, skills, and geographic location.

To thrive in this role, you will be comfortable taking ownership of the following responsibilities:

  • Overall accountability on a high-profile client portfolio of moderately to highly complex projects for legacy upstream oil and gas facilities from decommissioning to regulatory closure.
  • The primary focus will be technical and strategic oversight of remediation (both in-situ and ex-situ) and reclamation projects; however, understanding Phase 1 and Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), Risk Management Plans (RMP), Remedial Action Plans (RAP), Post-reclamation Monitoring, and Regulatory Closure Applications will also be important and part of the oversight role.
  • Oversee internal project teams across disciplines to facilitate delivery of best-in-class products and innovative solutions to meet our client’s requirements under their environmental program management framework.
  • Lead communication with the client’s program management team and project related stakeholders.
  • Provide support to project managers with subcontractor management and procurement of third-party services.
  • Provide senior review and approval of all technical deliverables and scopes of work associated with projects under the successful candidate’s purview.
  • Prepare and/or review technical correspondence, proposals, work plans, cost estimates, and reports, with a primary focus on regulatory submissions (which may include, Record of Site Conditions, Comprehensive Site Reviews, Conceptual Site Models, Phase 1 ESA, Phase 2 ESA, RMP/RAP, Detailed Site Assessments, Remedial Summary Reports, and Remediation or Reclamation Certificate Applications).
  • Work within a well-organized, and innovative culture with support systems that empower our professionals to focus on providing high quality solutions to our clients.
  • Transfer knowledge, share experiences, and support the training and mentorship of colleagues.
  • Be a senior member of our technical practice community that supports team and personal innovation, sets technical direction for the team, and delivers growth and success at all levels.

Your Expertise and Skills

  • Advanced degree in environmental science, soils, geology, engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Registration in or a member in good standing of a professional organization (e.g. AIA, ASET, APEGA).
  • A minimum of twenty (20) years previous experience in applied environmental science, including a combination of environmental consulting, industry and/or regulatory experience, with a minimum of ten (10) years of direct technical oversight experience of legacy upstream oil and gas projects.
  • Experience and assertiveness in driving scope, schedule and budget for a portfolio of moderately to highly complex oil and gas projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with preparing remedial options and cost analyses, remediation system design, and various types of environmental technical reports (ESAs, RMPs, RAPs, etc.), as well as the creation of work plans and cost estimates.
  • Experience overseeing moderately to highly complex upstream oil and gas projects, including review of reports and technical components such as conceptual site models, drilling plans, cross-sections, and sampling program selection.
  • Strong data evaluation skills and ability to make decisions based on findings.
  • Self-motivated, possess strong communication skills (verbal and written), and strong leadership skills.
  • Willingness to provide technical direction and active mentorship to junior and intermediate professionals and project managers.
  • Experience with various in-situ, ex-situ remediation technologies is an asset.
  • Understanding of reclamation approaches and requirements in forested, agricultural and grasslands in Crown and Private land in Alberta is an asset.
  • Experience with the Alberta Energy Regulator’s OneStop tool and working knowledge of provincial regulatory frameworks in Western Canada is also an asset.
  • In depth understanding of the Alberta Contaminated Sites Policy Framework, including the application of Tier 1 and Tier 2 guidelines, as well as CCME guideline experience required.
  • Experience working with the Indian Oil and Gas Canada (IOGC) is an asset.
  • A valid and clean class 5 driver’s license with no restrictions.

We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds.

We acknowledge that these experiences and perspectives help to enrich our teams and contribute to our ongoing success.

We are committed to providing access and reasonable accommodation in our employment for all applicants.

“Working with inspiring coworkers and clients across the globe over the past five years has been incredibly rewarding. Their passion motivates me to improve our client experience and work that I deliver.” - Erin Peck, Emissions Services

“There are not many places where a toxicologist can be boots-on-the-ground at an environmental emergency one day and deep in a human health risk assessment or litigation the next, but this company is one of them, and honestly, that breadth is what makes me love the work. We are a team of scientists with a broad range of talents and experiences who genuinely take the mission to heart, because protecting people and communities from chemical hazards is not abstract here; it is exactly why we show up every day. The culture reflects that shared commitment in the best way: collaborative, rigorous, and truly motivated by the impact we make together.” - Andre Richardson, Consulting

“I knew my position here would be more than just a job. Every day is a new, exciting challenge to solve, and I get to go home knowing that the work I am doing is having a positive impact on the world.” - J Esteves, R&D
