Job description

Industrial Hygienist

Trail, BC

Introduction

Brunel is currently seeking an experienced Industrial Hygienist to join our client’s Health & Safety team.

This position will provide leadership, technical direction, and program oversight for occupational hygiene and occupational health programs within a complex heavy industrial environment. The Industrial Hygienist will be responsible for anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace health hazards, including physical, chemical, and biological exposures. The role plays a critical part in protecting worker health, supporting regulatory compliance, and enabling risk-based decision-making across operations.

Working closely with operations, maintenance, projects, occupational health, environment, and leadership teams, the successful candidate will provide technical expertise on occupational hygiene matters while leading exposure assessment programs, exposure reduction initiatives, and health protection strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of occupational hygiene programs and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain risk-based exposure assessment strategies, including exposure inventories, exposure groups, sampling plans, monitoring programs, and exposure control recommendations.
  • Identify, assess, and manage occupational health risks related to metals, dusts, fumes, process gases, chemicals, noise, and thermal stress.
  • Evaluate and verify the effectiveness of occupational hygiene controls and recommend improvements using the hierarchy of controls.
  • Provide technical leadership and support to operations, maintenance, and leadership teams regarding occupational hygiene concerns and exposure-control initiatives.
  • Lead and support occupational hygiene and occupational health programs, including health protection, hearing conservation, WHMIS, asbestos management, chemical management, contamination control, biological monitoring, and medical surveillance.
  • Partner with occupational health professionals and external stakeholders to support medical surveillance and biological monitoring programs.
  • Ensure occupational hygiene data is accurately collected, validated, analyzed, trended, and reported through applicable data management systems.
  • Conduct audits and reviews of occupational hygiene programs and ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Manage Safety Data Sheet (SDS) programs and provide technical expertise related to chemical hazards and product stewardship.
  • Participate in chemical review and approval processes, including the evaluation of new chemicals, substitutions, exposure pathways, monitoring requirements, and control measures.
  • Develop and deliver training, educational materials, and awareness programs related to occupational hygiene risks and controls.
  • Lead exposure reduction initiatives and collaborate with operational leaders to identify and mitigate higher-risk exposures.
  • Provide occupational hygiene input into projects, operational changes, shutdowns, procurement activities, design reviews, and management of change processes.
  • Represent the organization during audits, regulatory interactions, stakeholder engagements, and occupational health and hygiene forums.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop occupational hygiene personnel while ensuring effective delivery of monitoring, documentation, and field program activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Hygiene, Occupational or Environmental Health, Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Professional certification such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) is preferred.
  • Candidates actively working toward certification may be considered.
  • Minimum five years of industrial occupational hygiene experience within mining, smelting, refining, chemical processing, manufacturing, fertilizer production, or other heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience leading exposure assessment programs and managing occupational health risks in complex operating environments.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, or providing technical leadership to hygienists, technicians, contractors, or technical personnel.
  • Strong knowledge of occupational hygiene principles, exposure assessment methodologies, biological monitoring, air monitoring, respiratory protection programs, and occupational health regulations.
  • Familiarity with chemical hazard management, SDS administration, WHMIS, medical surveillance programs, and exposure reduction strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex exposure data and communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, stakeholder management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively within a fast-paced, high-hazard industrial environment.
