Job Title: Security Guard - Shift Lead

Department: People & Culture - Security and Film Operations

Position Type: Permanent Full-Time (AM - 0600-1400: Friday-Tuesday, PM - 1400-2200: Friday-Tuesday, Overnight - 2200-0600: Thursday-Monday)

Hours: 40 hours per week

Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.

Department Overview:

The People & Culture Department is a shared services hub that supports Heritage Park’s people, culture, and workplace excellence through Human Resources, Volunteer Resources, Payroll & Benefits, Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), and Protection Services. The team delivers integrated services essential to the Park’s success, including employee and volunteer experience, talent acquisition and development, workforce planning, payroll and total rewards administration, and compliance with employment and safety legislation. It also leads health, safety, and environmental programs, oversees Protection Services and emergency readiness, and fosters a secure, inclusive environment for all. Through collaboration, accountability, and service excellence, the department advances the Park’s mission, strengthens organizational culture, and ensures Heritage Park remains a safe and engaging place to work and volunteer.

Job Overview:

The Shift Lead – Security Guard is both a working security guard and a frontline leader. In addition to performing all duties of a Security Guard, including patrols, incident response, access control, guest service, and emergency support, the Shift Lead assumes elevated responsibilities during their assigned shift. These include supervising guards on duty, ensuring tasks are completed to standard, providing coaching and guidance, handling escalated incidents, and communicating directly with management. The Shift Lead ensures smooth operations, professional standards, and compliance are maintained across all aspects of the shift.

Responsibilities:

Shift Leadership & Operational Oversight

  • Act as the designated shift lead, ensuring guards are briefed, assignments are clear, and operations run smoothly.
  • Assist in shift staffing via call-ins for sick coverage/no shows.
  • Conduct pre-shift briefings, distributing radios, keys, and providing updates on incidents, events, or hazards.
  • Serve as the primary contact during the shift for staff, guests, and management regarding security matters while keeping the Securities Manager informed; escalating requests where needed
  • Provide hands‑on coaching and mentorship to guards, modeling best practices in guest service, patrols, and incident handling.
  • Ensure accurate and complete handovers between shifts, communicating ongoing issues, incidents, and priorities.
  • Foster a team culture of respect, accountability, and calm under pressure.

Client Service and Visitor Experience

  • Perform all client service duties of a Security Guard, including greeting guests, answering inquiries, providing directions, and responding to concerns with professionalism.
  • Ensure a consistent guest-first approach across the shift, modeling courtesy, fairness, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Provide leadership in managing parking and crowd control during events.
  • Oversee guards’ interactions with guests, providing coaching when needed to ensure positive visitor experiences.

Safety and Security

  • Fulfill all core guard responsibilities, including regular foot and vehicle patrols, hazard identification, alarm response, and first aid/medical response.
  • Lead by example in patrol coverage and incident response, ensuring all guards complete assignments to standard.
  • Distribute, monitor, and secure radios, keys, and access control tools during shifts.
  • Direct security response to incidents and emergencies, escalating serious situations to the Manager.
  • Support event security operations, coordinating with other departments on barricades, traffic control, and guest safety.

Compliance, Documentation & Professional Conduct

  • Complete all guard documentation, including patrol logs, incident reports, and daily occurrence reports.
  • Ensure guards on shift complete reports accurately and on time, reviewing for quality and clarity.Collates shift security metrics and reports for Manager.
  • Maintain compliance with provincial security licensing requirements, health and safety regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Model professionalism, ethical conduct, and adherence to Heritage Park’s values in all interactions.
  • Provide real‑time feedback, mentoring and corrective coaching to guards to uphold compliance and document standards.

Organizational Excellence and Wellbeing

  • Contribute to inspiring and immersive experiences at the Park by engaging in Heritage Park initiatives that align with our mission and vision, ensuring authenticity in our historical setting and stories.

  • Demonstrate commitment to workplace health and safety by complying with Heritage Park's Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS), following safe work practices, reporting work‑related incidents, injuries, and hazards, participating in employer training, and adhering to policies including the Code of Conduct and the Workplace Violence and Harassment policy.
  • Volunteers are a vital part of Heritage Park’s success. Employees are expected to collaborate respectfully with volunteers and contribute to an environment where volunteers feel heard, safe, welcomed, and supported, recognizing the important role they play in delivering exceptional experiences for our community.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum completion of secondary school education; post-secondary education in Criminal Justice, Security, or a related field is considered an asset.
  • A valid Alberta Security Services License is mandatory for all security guard roles; Shift Leads are expected to maintain all licensing in good standing.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of security‑related experience is required, with at least one year in a lead or shift oversight capacity preferred.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ client service experience is required. Experience in an attraction, tourism, or multi‑venue setting will be considered a strong asset.
  • Must be able to obtain a Certified Officer Protection Certification within 12 months of start date.
  • Demonstrated experience with conflict de‑escalation, incident response, and leadership in high‑pressure environments is essential.
  • Training in conflict de‑escalation skills required. (Ex; Verbal Judo)
  • Training in use of force considered an asset. (Ex; PPCT)
  • ProTect and ProServe (via AGLC) Certifications required
  • A valid Alberta Driver’s License with a clean abstract is required.
  • Fluency in English is essential; the ability to communicate in additional languages is considered an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in client‑facing setting with the ability to coach and mentor others.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, exercising sound judgment and professionalism while directing others.
  • All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to complete a Police Information Check as a condition of employment. A criminal record will not automatically disqualify an applicant; any information disclosed will be assessed confidentially on a case‑by‑case basis in accordance with Alberta human rights legislation, considering relevance to the role and our commitment to equitable and inclusive hiring practices.

Special Clothing and Equipment:

  • Appropriate security officer uniform will be issued by Heritage Park. Washing and maintaining uniforms in a presentable fashion will be the employees' responsibility.
  • Heritage Park provides footwear allowance as per the Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 37
  • Individuals will be required to supply their own appropriate outdoor weather protective clothing (gloves, toques, hats) it must be black or navy blue in colour and without visible logos.

Special Working Conditions:

  • The position will be exposed to weather extremes and as the position works both indoors and outdoors, with much of the work taking place outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions including conditions of darkness.
  • These positions will require the incumbents to engage in physical activities such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time.

Hours of Work:

  • The standard hours for this position are 40 hours per week; on a regular reoccurring schedule
  • There are various scheduled hours of work, including shift work, and special events coverage to ensure 24 hours per day, 7 days per week security coverage.
