Job description

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) believes that respect and understanding of human rights can be a powerful force for positive change. The CFO is a senior executive who provides strategic leadership over finance and accounting, information technology and facilities.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CFO ensures the Museum’s financial resources, systems infrastructure, assets, and internal services support its strategic priorities, operational needs, and commitment to accountability. They will provide leadership over accounting and finance, operational efficiencies, systems modernization and oversight of organizational assets.

The ideal candidate is a values-oriented and collaborative executive who combines strong financial expertise with broad operational leadership. They provide strategic oversight of finance, information technology, facilities, and operations; advise the CEO, Executive Team, Board of Trustees, and Board committees; translate complex financial information for non-financial audiences; and represent CMHR with government, community, museum, and sector partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Finance, IT and Physical Operations portfolio, providing strategic direction and oversight across finance and accounting, information technology, facilities, and security operations.
  • Advise the CEO, Executive Team, Board of Trustees, and Board committees on financial strategy, organizational performance, risk, assets, and operational priorities.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audits, internal controls, government reporting, long-term financial planning, and financial services provided to the CMHR Foundation.
  • Present complex financial and operational information clearly for both financial and non-financial audiences, supporting informed decision-making across the organization.
  • Provide strategic oversight of the Museum’s infrastructure, lifecycle maintenance requirements, facilities operations, major service contracts, and future capital projects.
  • Lead the evolution of the Museum’s information technology systems and internal services, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, modernize processes, and strengthen organizational performance.
  • Contribute to corporate planning, organizational strategy, policy development, enterprise risk management, and major institutional decisions as a member of the Executive Team.
  • Build relationships with government stakeholders, auditors, advisors, vendors, sector partners, and other national museums, while representing CMHR through committees, events, tours, and public-facing activities.

Qualifications

  • A Chartered Professional Accountant designation is required, along with progressive senior leadership experience in finance, operations, internal services, or a comparable executive portfolio.
  • Strong knowledge of financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, accounting, reporting, audit, internal controls, risk management, regulatory compliance, and asset management.
  • Broad operational experience overseeing areas such as facilities, information technology, service delivery, major contracts, infrastructure, lifecycle maintenance, or capital planning.
  • Experience reporting and presenting to Boards, Board committees, governing bodies, or senior government stakeholders, with the ability to simplify complex financial and operational information for non-financial audiences.
  • Experience leading skilled professional teams and supporting experienced directors, along with involvement in systems modernization, process improvement, or organizational transformation.
  • Experience within a public sector, Crown corporation, non-profit, museum, cultural institution, unionized environment, or similarly regulated and publicly accountable organization is an asset.
  • Exceptional communication, relationship-building, analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills, supported by a commitment to human rights, equity, inclusion, reconciliation, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate in both official languages is an asset.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) believes that a diversity of experiences and thought drives innovation and transformation. They are working towards building a workforce that is representative of the community in which they live and that they serve. They are committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all and so we encourage you to identify your employment equity status in your cover letter or resume. The information you voluntarily disclose will be kept confidential and used solely for the purpose of increasing workforce diversity.

The CMHR is committed to developing a work environment and recruitment processes that are inclusive and barrier-free. Please advise the HR representative if accommodation measures must be taken to enable you to apply and be assessed in a fair and equitable manner.
