The Ministry of Energy and Minerals is responsible for Sustaining the interests of Albertans through the stewardship and responsible development of energy and mineral resource systems.

The Strategy and Market Access Division is responsible for the department's strategic direction, advocating for increased access to global markets for all energy and minerals resources to strengthen both provincial and national economies while proactively communicating how Alberta produces subsurface resources with some of the highest environmental, labour, and human rights standards in the world.

The Branch of Energy Information and Analysis is the department's information experts related to the upstream sector. It is also responsible for the delivery and analysis of energy related statistics and information for use by internal and external stakeholders.

Energy Information and Analysis have two permanent opportunities in their units.

The unit of Statistics and Royalty Analytics is responsible for the collection, analysts and reporting of key statistics related to the energy industry.

The Unit of Forecasting & Business Info is responsible for collecting, analyzing, reporting, and forecasting of Alberta's energy industry incl. production and royalties.

Role Responsibilities

Are you looking for an opportunity to apply your expertise in energy economics, economic analysis, and forecasting to support strategic decision-making in Alberta's energy sector? Energy Information and Analysis has two permanent opportunities in their units.

Reporting to the Manager, the Analyst conducts economic, fundamental and financial analysis and research on Alberta's energy resources. The role is responsible for conducting research on trends for oil sands, oil, and natural gas economics, as well as the development of various production forecasts for the Government of Alberta. The role requires a successful candidate to have strong knowledge and familiarity with energy statistics and sources, have a very good attention to detail, and be able to both fact-check the documents and develop information products on short notice.

The Analyst will need to establish consistent and ongoing communication with other business units and stakeholders, employ appropriate project planning techniques on all business unit activities, and foster personal growth for oneself and staff to assist all members in the business unit achieve their potential.

As the Analyst, you play a key role to foster personal growth and assist team members to achieve their potential. You will also be accountable on the following activities in the branch/division:

  • Conduct comprehensive analyses and views on crude oil, bitumen and natural gas economics.
  • Conduct energy market developments and investment conditions.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of Alberta's royalty programs and competitiveness.
  • Coordinate, gather and analyze energy statistics and key energy reports.
  • Perform fact checks, statistical verifications and statistical reviews under tight deadlines, with minimal or no supervision.
  • Perform tasks related to indicators and performance measures, including the development of documentation and calculation of results.
  • Develop key statistics and information products. This requires thorough understanding of sources, ability to select correct and mutually consistent statistics, and strong data interpretation skills.
  • Respond to action requests from the Deputy Minister's Office and requests for information and assistance from other Branches.
  • Be dedicated to continuous professional development and ongoing enhancement of analytic skills.

Qualifications

Minimum University graduation in Economics, Business or Engineering or a related field supplemented by four (4) years of related experience in:

  • Economic Analysis
  • Energy Statistics and Verification of Results
  • Forecasting and Research

Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one-for-one basis

The following will be considered assets:

  • Knowledge of Alberta royalty frameworks and energy regulatory environments.
  • Knowledge of upstream and downstream oil and gas operations and related market dynamics.
  • Knowledge of financial aspects of energy industry.
  • Strong research skills and an ability to effectively present findings.
  • 36.25 hours per week (full time) Monday to Friday.

Term of Employment:

  • This are two full-time permanent positions.

Location:

  • Petroleum Plaza Building North Tower, Edmonton.

Final candidates will be required to undergo an academic credentials verification.

A written assessment will be conducted following the interview as part of the selection process. The assessment must be completed without access to the internet or any electronic devices, including mobile phones.
