Job description

Based in Vancouver, British Columbia or Calgary, Alberta, and reporting to the Head of Credit Execution, Western Canada, the successful candidate will possess a strong work ethic, bring seasoned credit judgement, strong execution capabilities and demonstrated proficiency operating independently in a dynamic team-based environment. The Associate Director will be expected to lead and assist in actively managing a wide variety of complex senior debt lending mandates, support portfolio oversight, coordinate effectively with senior internal stakeholders and contribute to the development of junior team members. Working hours are dictated by portfolio and transaction demands under a hybrid work arrangement, with days both in the office and at home. Additionally, occasional travel for client and team meetings will be required.

  • Support National Client Group, Western Canada team members (Execution and Relationship Management) in managing and growing an existing portfolio of relationships (both bilateral & syndicated);
  • Work closely with financial advisors, private equity sponsors and internal banking partners (i.e.: cash management, commodities & derivatives, debt capital markets, equity capital markets, investment banking and loan syndications) to perform required due diligence on prospective opportunities;
  • Prepare financial models, borrower risk ratings and credit analysis to support new transactions, amendments, annual reviews and other portfolio requests;
  • Work independently to complete complex, high-quality credit analysis, underwriting and credit documentation review for existing and new lending opportunities & mandates;
  • Engage with Credit Risk Management to obtain authorization on transactions in accordance with the Bank’s risk guidelines;
  • Manage an assigned portfolio to ensure that covenants remain in compliance with agreed upon terms & conditions and that annual reviews are completed in accordance with Bank policies;
  • Work in close collaboration with teammates to ensure that client and collateral files are updated in a timely manner;
  • Assist the Director of Execution in coaching and developing junior team members, including providing guidance on credit analysis, underwriting and transaction execution best practices; and
  • Support the Head of Credit Execution, Western Canada, as required, in reviewing the credit quality of the National Client Group, Western Canada portfolio.

You will collaborate with senior members of the National Client Group, Western Canada team, lead complex credit workstreams independently, and contribute to the development of junior team members. As you develop your professional skillset and gain valuable transaction and portfolio management experience, several growth opportunities exist – both within the National Client Group, Western Canada team and across the broader Bank.

Requirements:

  • Hold a bachelors’ degree in accounting, business, economics, finance, or a related field;
  • Professional designation(s) and/or an advanced degree is considered a strong asset;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in corporate or upper mid-market commercial banking;
  • Knowledge of credit underwriting, loan structuring (bilateral/syndicated transactions), financial statement analysis and financial modeling;
  • Strong familiarity with credit agreement terms, market standard structures with the ability to review legal documentation and identify key credit and business risks;
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex credit execution workstreams, including due diligence, credit submissions, documentation review and closing coordination;
  • Sound judgment, accountability and initiative, with ability to manage multiple priorities under tight timelines while maintaining a high standard of analysis, execution quality and risk discipline;
  • Experience in coaching or guiding junior team members on financial analysis, credit underwriting, underwriting standards, and transaction execution practices;
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Copilot used in the creation of presentations, confidential information memoranda and other written documents; and
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
