Job description

DuroByte Inc. is an automation controls company with offices in the USA and Canada. Our Canadian Headquarters is based out of Tecumseh, Ontario. Our mission is to blend superior technology and customized product designs to boost performance, functionality, and productivity. DuroByte's strength lies in its ability to provide complete automation solutions for customers. Our expertise ranges from controls programming and technical support to complete turn-key automation systems

The Position

The Controls Specialist is responsible for designing, programming, integrating, commissioning, and supporting industrial automation control systems. This customer-facing role works closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop practical, reliable solutions that meet customer specifications and production requirements. The successful candidate will provide both in-house and on-site support throughout the project lifecycle, including design review, system development, equipment integration, start-up, troubleshooting, training, and long-term technical support.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, apply, and validate industrial control systems to achieve the specified functionality and performance of automated equipment.
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI systems, including Siemens, Schneider Electric, Omron, and Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley ControlLogix platforms.
  • Commission, debug, and start up PLC-based automation systems at DuroByte and customer facilities.
  • Analyze and resolve PLC, HMI, electrical, network, and equipment-interface issues in a timely and systematic manner.
  • Integrate controls systems with robots, CNC equipment, machine vision systems, fastening systems, motion-control devices, and other industrial equipment.
  • Read, interpret, and follow customer specifications, sequence-of-operations documents, electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and equipment standards.
  • Review electrical and mechanical designs and provide controls-related feedback to support system functionality, serviceability, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication networks, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, TCP/IP, and Profinet.
  • Apply best practices in controls design, software structure, version control, testing, and technical documentation for new and existing equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain complete project documentation, including controls descriptions, software backups, schematics, operating procedures, troubleshooting guides, maintenance information, and recommended spare-parts lists.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, robotics, software, manufacturing, and project-management team members to meet project schedules and customer commitments.
  • Provide clear technical communication, customer training, and knowledge transfer to operators, maintenance personnel, engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide on-site service, production support, and troubleshooting assistance during equipment installation, commissioning, launch, and ongoing operation.
  • Follow DuroByte and customer safety requirements and support continuous improvement of controls standards, processes, and reusable solutions.

Job Requirements (Education/Experience)

  • Technical post-secondary degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or a related field.
  • Three or more years of relevant experience designing, programming, commissioning, or supporting industrial automation systems.
  • Hands-on experience with one or more major PLC platforms; experience with Siemens and Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley systems is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electrical control systems, PLC logic, HMIs, industrial networks, sensors, actuators, and machine interfaces.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, technical specifications, and sequence-of-operations documents.
  • Experience in the automotive or advanced-manufacturing sector is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of robots, CNC equipment, machine vision systems, fastening systems, servo/motion control, and machine-safety systems is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly to customers and team members.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while contributing effectively within a cross-functional team.
  • Valid driver's licence and passport, with the ability and willingness to travel within Canada, the United States, and potentially internationally.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, or extended hours during equipment installation, commissioning, production launches, and service activities.
  • Ability to satisfy customer-site access requirements, which may include background checks and drug testing.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Full-time, permanent position based primarily at DuroByte's Canadian office in Tecumseh, Ontario, with regular travel to customer facilities as required.
  • Reports to the Technical Director.
  • Travel outside of local geographic region 50%-75%.
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience and a comprehensive benefits package.
  • Inclusive, professional, results-driven, collaborative, and innovative working environment.

If you are looking to play an important role in a results-driven, collaborative, and innovative organization, we would be pleased to hear from you.
