Job description

Regional Medical Director – Western Canada

Full-time, permanent, hybrid work schedule with 40% regional travel.

Introduction

We are seeking an experienced Regional Medical Director to join our client's team located in Calgary, Alberta. The Regional Medical Director provides medical leadership across a network of veterinary hospitals throughout Western Canada, partnering with hospital teams to advance clinical excellence, mentor veterinarians, and support operational success. This role combines hands‑on clinical practice with strategic leadership, serving as a trusted advisor to veterinary teams while helping shape medical standards, quality of care, and professional development across the region.

This is a full-time permanent opportunity located in Calgary, Alberta, that is available immediately. This role reports to the National Medical Director and requires approximately 40% travel throughout Western Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Medical Leadership & Quality of Care:
  • Champions high standards of veterinary medicine across all regional hospitals.
  • Promotes evidence-based medical practices and supports the implementation of medical protocols, standards, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Reviews medical records, clinical outcomes, and performance reports to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Partners with the National Medical Director to develop and implement regional medical guidelines and best practices.
  • Coaching, Mentorship & Clinical Development:
  • Coaches, mentors, and supports veterinarians through regular in‑clinic visits and regional engagement.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to Managing DVMs to strengthen medical leadership within each hospital.
  • Supports mentorship programs for new and early‑career veterinarians.
  • Coordinates continuing education, peer learning opportunities, and clinical training initiatives.
  • Strengthens regional capabilities in medicine, surgery, diagnostics, and dentistry.
  • Operational Partnership:
  • Collaborates with Regional Operations Managers and Practice Managers to align medical excellence with operational performance.
  • Provides clinical insight to support strategic and operational decision‑making.
  • Utilizes hospital performance metrics and key performance indicators to improve client compliance, doctor productivity, RVT utilization, and hospital efficiency.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Supports clinics in translating clinical data and workflow insights into measurable improvements.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Professional Standards:
  • Ensures hospitals maintain compliance with provincial veterinary regulatory requirements and professional standards.
  • Conducts compliance reviews and supports hospitals in maintaining regulatory excellence.
  • Stays informed on evolving veterinary regulations and communicates updates to regional teams.
  • Assists with veterinary board complaints and complex medical cases when required.
  • Recruitment, Engagement & Retention:
  • Partners with Talent Acquisition to recruit, assess, and interview veterinarian candidates.
  • Represents the organization at veterinary conferences, industry events, and university recruitment initiatives.
  • Supports veterinarian engagement, career development, succession planning, and retention strategies.
  • Provides ongoing coaching and career guidance to Managing DVMs and Associate Veterinarians.
  • Regional Leadership & Culture:
  • Fosters a collaborative, supportive, and high‑performing culture across multiple hospitals.
  • Organizes and leads regional DVM meetings, medical rounds, and professional development sessions.
  • Promotes psychological safety, teamwork, continuous learning, and medical excellence throughout the region.
  • Strengthens collaboration between veterinarians, RVTs, and support staff.
  • Clinical Practice:
  • Maintains an active clinical practice approximately three days per week while providing direct patient care and supporting regional hospitals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree (or equivalent) from an accredited veterinary institution, required.
  • Licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice veterinary medicine in Alberta.
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of clinical experience in small animal veterinary medicine.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within a veterinary practice or multi‑site veterinary environment, required.
  • Multi‑site leadership experience is required.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, mentoring, and relationship‑building skills.
  • Proven clinical expertise in small animal medicine, surgery, and dentistry.
  • Experience mentoring and developing veterinarians is highly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of veterinary medical standards, regulatory requirements, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to analyze operational and clinical performance data and implement continuous improvement strategies.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other business software applications.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 40% throughout Western Canada.
  • Ability to balance clinical responsibilities with regional leadership and operational priorities.
