Keepers of the Circle is an urban Indigenous Hub operated by the Temiskaming Native Women's Support Group, a non-profit organization established in 1997 to support the cultural, social, and economic equity of Indigenous women and the wellness of their families and communities. Keepers of the Circle is the Ontario representative of the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) with two sites, one in Temiskaming Shores and the other in Kirkland Lake.

Position Summary

The Keepers of the Circle Finance Director will provide strategic leadership, stewardship, and oversight of all financial operations for our Indigenous-led, not‑for‑profit organization. This role ensures financial integrity, sustainability, accountability, and compliance with funder requirements while supporting the organization’s mission, values, and commitment to Indigenous community well‑being, cultural integrity, and self‑determination. The Finance Director will work closely with senior leadership, Board of Directors, Finance department, program managers, government funders, and external auditors.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

• Lead all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial reporting.


• Provide strategic financial insights to the Executive Director, Leadership Team, and Board to support evidence‑based decision‑making.


• Strengthen financial systems, internal controls, and organizational financial resilience.

Financial Operations & Compliance

• Oversee day‑to‑day accounting, payroll, fund accounting, and financial controls.


• Ensure compliance with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), provincial ministries, federal funders, and other grant requirements.


• Lead annual audit processes and ensure adherence to GAAP or ASNPO standards.


• Maintain accurate, timely financial statements and funder reports.

Funding, Grants & Restricted Contributions

• Oversee reporting for grants, contribution agreements, restricted funding, and multi‑year funding streams.


• Support program teams with budget development, financial tracking, and funder reporting.


• Distinguish secured funding from future opportunities and ensure transparent tracking.


• Lead and mentor finance staff, fostering accountability, high performance, and continuous improvement.


• Collaborate with Indigenous partners, advisory councils, and community stakeholders to ensure culturally grounded financial practices.


• Support organizational planning, staffing decisions, and investment strategies.


• Ensure incorporation of the Seven Grandfather teachings in their daily work plans.

Operational Oversight

• Maintain financial systems in QuickBooks online and administrative processes.


• Oversee contracts, procurement, and risk management frameworks.


• Liaise with auditors, legal counsel, and external financial advisors.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Credentials

• CPA designation required or in progress


• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.

Experience

• Minimum 5 years of progressive financial management experience, including senior leadership roles.


• Experience working with Indigenous organizations, First Nations governments, Tribal Councils, or Indigenous led not‑for‑profits strongly preferred.


• Experience with project‑based accounting, funder reporting, budgeting, payroll oversight, and audits.


• Knowledge of ISC funding agreements, provincial funding streams, and federal contribution agreements considered an asset.

Technical Skills

• Advance skills with accounting system QuickBooks Online.


• Advanced Excel skills and strong financial modelling capabilities.


• Strong understanding of CPA standards and general accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to ensure compliance with audit requirements, grant agreements, and internal controls


• Knowledge of ASNPO standards preferred.


• Demonstrated commitment to Indigenous cultural safety, reconciliation, and respectful engagement.


• Ability to work collaboratively in a mission‑driven, community‑focused environment.


• Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate financial information into clear, actionable insights.
