Job description

What is the Opportunity?

Aecon Civil is a recognized leader in the market, backed by strong self‑perform capabilities and deep local expertise. We play a key role in building and enhancing infrastructure across Canada, the U.S., and an expanding international footprint improving everyday life through the roads, bridges, tunnels, and transit systems that connect communities. With more than a century of experience and a full suite of integrated services, Aecon is a trusted partner for delivering complex civil projects, including tunnels, transit expansions, airports, ports, highways, and large‑scale site development.

The Lifting & Rigging Superintendent is responsible for the planning, coordination, execution, and oversight of all lifting, rigging, hoisting, and critical material handling activities on the project. This role ensures all lifting operations are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project requirements, regulatory standards, and company procedures. The Lifting & Rigging Superintendent provides technical expertise, leadership, and direction to all on-site employees, subcontractors, and project teams to support complex construction and heavy civil operations.

The Arctic Over the Horizon Radar Project is a major federal initiative led by Canada’s Department of National Defence, playing a critical role in strengthening national and continental defence.

As part of this program, Aecon’s Civil team is advancing Canada’s infrastructure through a strategic partnership with Pomerleau and Stantec. Delivered through a collaborative Integrated Project Delivery model, this project team is contributing to the design and construction of innovative infrastructure that will support one of the most advanced radar systems in North America.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a project of national significance, where collaboration, innovation, and purpose drive meaningful impact.

What You'll Do Here:

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of all lifting and rigging activities across the project.
  • Develop and review lift plans for common, complex, and critical lifts, ensuring all hazards are identified and mitigated prior to execution.
  • Ensure lifting operations comply with applicable legislation, regulations, industry standards, and company procedures.
  • Oversee crane operations, heavy lifts, specialty rigging activities, equipment mobilization, and material handling operations.
  • Review engineering drawings, lift studies, rigging arrangements, and load calculations to ensure safe execution.
  • Coordinate lifting activities with construction, engineering, safety, logistics, and subcontractor teams.
  • Ensure appropriate lifting equipment, rigging gear, and personnel qualifications are in place before work begins.
  • Participate in constructability reviews and provide technical input during planning and execution phases.
  • Lead pre-lift meetings, hazard assessments, job briefings, and critical lift reviews.
  • Monitor field operations to ensure approved lift plans and safe work practices are followed.
  • Establish and enforce exclusion zones, lifting boundaries, and traffic control requirements.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and safety observations related to lifting activities and implement corrective actions.
  • Support project scheduling efforts by identifying lifting requirements and resource needs.
  • Maintain records of lift plans, inspections, certifications, and training documentation.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, and technical leadership to supervisors, forepersons, riggers, signalers, and crane operators.
  • Interface with clients, regulators, engineers, and third-party inspectors regarding lifting activities.
  • Stop work immediately when unsafe conditions, hazards, or deviations from approved lift plans are identified.

What You Bring to the Team:

  • 10+ years of experience in heavy civil or major infrastructure construction.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience supervising large-scale lifting and rigging operations.
  • Industry-recognized Rigging and Hoisting certification required.
  • Strong understanding of load charts, rigging calculations, crane capacities, lifting studies, and engineered lift plans.
  • Proven experience managing complex and critical lifts on major construction projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, crane regulations, and industry standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, lift studies, specifications, and construction schedules.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and project management software.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel as required.
  • Availability to work fully in-person 5 days per week.

Reason for Vacancy: Evergreen

The expected pay range for this role is $120,000 - $180,000 per year
