Role Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly skilled Geomatics Engineer to join our dynamic team as the Project Leader directing and controlling the establishment, maintenance, and preservation of Alberta's provincial reference system.

As the Project Leader, you will coordinate and provide leadership to a team of professionals, collaborating with various government departments, land surveyors, and the public to ensure the integrity and functionality of our geodetic spatial referencing system.

In this role, you will strategically apply surveying legislation and policies to develop and support our geodetic positioning and mapping systems.

Effective client service and strong project management skills are essential as you collaborate closely with the Director of Surveys to manage operations and deliver sound geomatics engineering solutions.

You will coordinate and facilitate strategies related to spatial referencing design alternatives, communicate these strategies to internal and external stakeholders, and provide support to municipalities and others for maintaining the Alberta geodetic spatial referencing system.

Additionally, you will maintain and update the Multipurpose Alberta Survey Control Operations and Tasks (MASCOT) survey system and provide technical support to internal and external clients on issues related to geo-positioning.

As a representative of the Government of Alberta, you will actively participate at provincial and national levels on various issues related to surveying, geodesy, and mapping.

You will also provide supervision and leadership to the Geodetic Control Unit Technologists to ensure effective management of the unit and contribute to its ongoing success.

Minimum Recruitment Standards (MRS)

Required :

  • University graduation in Engineering, Applied Science, Geology, Geophysics, Surveying Engineering.
  • Plus, five years related experience.
  • Eligible for membership with the APEGA.

Equivalency : Directly related education or experience considered based on :

1 year of education for 1 year of experience.

Assets :

  • Familiarity with the Alberta provincial reference system, the land survey system, and the Alberta township system, and understanding of the Surveys Act.
  • Competence in least-squares adjustments and software as well as statistical analysis.
  • Competent in writing programs using modern programming languages. In addition, knowledge of FORTRAN and SQL Plus is beneficial.
  • A functional understanding of ORACLE database management and UNIX operating systems.
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s Spatial Reference Design Alternatives (SRDA) initiative as well as knowledge of standards, specifications, and guidelines for establishing and maintaining Alberta survey control using GNSS and conventional surveying methodologies.
  • Proficiency in operating conventional surveying equipment, GNSS surveying equipment, differential GNSS surveying systems and associated software.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety policies and directives, as well as general Department policies and directives.
  • Strong critical thinking skills using creative technical approaches and the ability to work independently, make decisions in accordance with operational and department policies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal communication abilities, and effective operational and time management.
  • Competent in the use of computer applications such as the Microsoft suite of programs.

Hours of Work : 36.25 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday permanent in Edmonton.
