Job description

Job Description

Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton.

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with Alberta Health Services (AHS), invites applications for an interventional cardiologist of mid to senior academic level to join as a full-time tenured track faculty within the Division of Pediatric Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. This position is a part of the Alberta Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP).

This full-time (1.0 FTE), tenure-track (contingent) position comprises approximately 60% time for clinical service and 40% time for academic pursuits, divided between research, teaching, and administrative duties (negotiable).

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will join 20 pediatric cardiologists, including 2 full-time interventional cardiologists and an interventional nurse specialist. The team provides a full spectrum of clinical pediatric cardiology services with expertise in multi-modal diagnostic imaging, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, fetal cardiology, heart failure, cardiac transplantation, ventricular assist device application, preventive cardiology and pediatric cardiac rehabilitation within the Stollery Children’s Hospital Cardiac Program. In addition to clinical care, the division is active in teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels and engaged in research in several areas of expertise, including clinical, translational, health services and population pillars. The Stollery Cardiac Program is one of the two largest cardiac surgical centers in Canada and we service the majority of children across Western Canada through the Western Canadian Children’s Heart Network (WCCHN), with 3 pediatric and congenital cardiac surgeons, several pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, a dedicated pediatric cardiac intensive care unit, and a surgical neonatal intensive care unit with expertise in neonatal cardiac care.

Our team performs 450 - 500 cardiac catheterization procedures per year with two thirds of the cases being interventional, including surgical hybrid, procedures. We have growing expertise in performing 3D echo-rather than angiography-guided transcatheter interventions, the first in Canada. The Interventional Cardiology Service supports the WCCHN, accepting most referrals from all three prairie provinces and from the Northwest Territories and Nunavut for diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures.

Interventional pediatric cardiologists at our institution work in close collaboration with the adult congenital cardiac interventional program at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Mazankowski Heart Institute which also supports all three Canadian prairie provinces. The applicant, as is true for most of our faculty, will also participate in general inpatient cardiac service and night/weekend call, and in a general outpatient clinic.

  • Clinical: Clinical service would include cardiac catheterization laboratory services and general pediatric cardiology care, including inpatient cardiac ward or consultative services and general pediatric cardiology outpatient clinics.
  • Education and Mentorship: Teach and mentor learners at all levels in clinical and academic settings.
  • Research Contribution: Advance the division’s research portfolio, including facilitating funding opportunities, promoting academic productivity, and supporting faculty in achieving high-impact publications. Academic productivity is assessed based on locally initiated clinical research, national and international collaborations, publications in peer-reviewed journals, and other related activities.
  • Collaboration and Engagement: Work closely with other programs, interdisciplinary teams, and healthcare professionals to advance Pediatric Cardiology care and the education of Pediatric Cardiology trainees.

Qualifications

Interested applicants must have:

  • MD degree (or equivalent)
  • Completed residency training in Pediatrics and subspecialty training in Pediatric Cardiology.
  • A minimum of 1 year of dedicated training in advanced Invasive Pediatric Interventional Cardiology
  • Experience and success in research, with a proven record of research achievements as evidenced by, at a minimum, peer-reviewed publications
  • Certified or eligible to become a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Pediatric Cardiology) or equivalent
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Considered An Asset

Interest/Training in Pediatric Lymphatic Diagnostics and Intervention In addition, individuals must embody the values and qualities essential to our team culture:

  • Emotional Intelligence: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to foster positive relationships with patients, families, learners, and colleagues.
  • Adaptability: A flexible and proactive approach to challenges in clinical, academic, and research environments.
  • Leadership and Initiative: The ability to inspire, mentor, and motivate learners and team members, contributing to a culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Teamwork: A collegial and collaborative spirit that thrives in a multidisciplinary setting.
