Job Opportunity

Shift Program Counsellor (Competition #30‑26)

Overview

Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV) is seeking an experienced clinical counsellor to support the provincial Shift BC program. In this role you will manage a dedicated caseload of Shift participants while collaborating closely with FSGV’s clinical team and Shift’s interdisciplinary partners. Shift is British Columbia’s secondary and tertiary prevention program for individuals at risk of radicalization to violence. The program provides voluntary, non‑punitive, and non‑investigative support that focuses on behavioural change and community safety, not on changing beliefs or ideologies.

As a Shift Program Counsellor you will provide specialized assessment, therapeutic counselling, case coordination, and interdisciplinary consultation. Counsellors approach this work from a trauma‑informed, intersectional, and strengths‑based lens, supporting participants in fostering safety, stability, community connection, and pro‑social engagement through collaborative, participant‑centred interventions.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and develop individualized safety plans.
  • Deliver evidence‑based therapeutic counselling (including somatic, parts‑work/IFS, and expressive arts interventions).
  • Coordinate case management and facilitate interdisciplinary consultation.
  • Engage participants in culturally responsive and anti‑oppressive practice.
  • Document services and progress in accordance with professional standards.
  • Actively participate in program evaluation and quality improvement activities.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology, Social Work, or equivalent (MA, M.Ed., MSW) and registered as an RCC or RSW.
  • Minimum three years’ counselling experience with individuals experiencing trauma and complex psychosocial needs.
  • Training in trauma‑informed counselling, somatic approaches, parts‑work/IFS, and expressive arts‑based interventions.
  • Experience with collaborative case planning, crisis response, and interdisciplinary consultation.
  • Experience or interest in violence prevention, disengagement work, or working with individuals vulnerable to radicalization to violence.
  • Strong understanding of trauma‑informed practice and neurobiological impacts of trauma.
  • Excellent clinical counselling skills including engagement, risk assessment, safety planning, and intervention.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multi‑sectoral and interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience working with diverse populations impacted by trauma, systemic barriers, marginalization, poverty, abuse, addiction, and mental health concerns.
  • Commitment to trauma‑informed, anti‑oppressive, culturally responsive, and intersectional practice.
  • Effective communication, organization, and documentation skills.

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check.
  • Registered (or eligible for registration) with an appropriate professional body (e.g., BCACC, BC College of Social Workers).

Benefits

  • Flexible scheduling to accommodate life/work balance.
  • Three weeks’ vacation for full‑time staff (entitlement increases thereafter).
  • Three paid household leave days per year.
  • Two paid Wellness Days per year.
  • Paid sick days.
  • Two and a half paid Agency days for full‑time staff.
  • Five paid days for education leave per year.
  • One paid Moving Day per year.
  • Subsidized professional association annual dues (if applicable).
  • Referral bonus program.
  • Milestone celebrations.
  • On‑the‑job education through various Lunch and Learns.
  • Safe and respectful work environment.
  • Opportunities for growth and ongoing support, mentoring, and recognition.
  • A work culture that values transparency, teamwork, learning, fairness, and integrity.
  • (Pro‑rated for part‑time staff)

Health and Wellness Resources

  • Generous health/dental benefits after 3 months.
  • Three flex benefit options to meet individualized needs.
  • Option of psychological/counselling services (up to $1,500 per year).
  • Employee Assistance Plan.
  • Long‑Term Disability Plan.
  • Insurance and travel insurance (available for staff working 20+ hours per week).

Additional Information

  • Municipal Pension Plan enrollment for eligible employees.
  • Work hours: 21 hours per week.
  • Salary: GS13 Step 1 – $37.89 per hour.
  • Location: 1638 East Broadway, Vancouver, BC (hybrid work possible).
  • Posting remains open until filled.

How to Apply

Submit your application via the FSGV website. If applying through another platform, ensure your application is submitted through the career website at https://fsgv.ca/careers/. Short‑listed candidates will be contacted for interviews.

We believe in inclusion and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all staff that dismantles barriers and creates opportunities. Recruitment, hiring, promotion, and compensation decisions will be made without regard to race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, political beliefs, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or applicable criminal condition.

If you require a disability‑related accommodation to participate in the recruitment process or are an internal candidate, please email your resume and cover letter (indicating the competition number #30‑26 in the subject line) to hrinbox@fsgv.ca.
