Development Officer – Annual Giving

Full-Time Monday to Friday | 37.5 hours per week | Occasional evening and weekend work required

Reporting directly to the Director of Philanthropy, the Development Officer – Annual Giving plays a key role in advancing Calgary Humane Society's mission by developing and implementing comprehensive annual giving strategies that inspire philanthropic support and deepen donor engagement.

The primary objective of this role is to grow annual giving revenue by acquiring, retaining, reactivating, and upgrading donors through integrated fundraising campaigns and exceptional donor stewardship. The Development Officer will develop meaningful donor journeys that encourage long-term support and help build a sustainable pipeline for future major and planned giving opportunities.

The ideal candidate is a goal-oriented fundraising professional with demonstrated success in annual giving, donor stewardship, direct response fundraising, and digital engagement strategies. This individual will leverage data-driven decision-making to strengthen relationships with donors and supporters, including volunteers, foster families, adopters, and the broader community.

The Development Officer – Annual Giving will lead fundraising initiatives including direct mail appeals, monthly giving programs, digital fundraising campaigns, donor stewardship programs, raffles and lottery campaigns, and donor acquisition and retention strategies that support Calgary Humane Society's mission of protecting animals, supporting people, and creating a more humane world.

Key Responsibilities:

Annual Giving Strategy & Campaign Management

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive annual giving strategy focused on donor acquisition, retention, reactivation, upgrade, and revenue growth.
  • Manage and grow Calgary Humane Society's annual and monthly donor portfolios through integrated fundraising and stewardship initiatives.
  • Lead the planning, development, execution, and evaluation of annual fundraising campaigns across direct mail, email, digital platforms, monthly giving programs, raffles, and lottery initiatives.
  • Collaborate with members of the Philanthropy and Fund Development team to identify and cultivate opportunities to move donors to higher levels of engagement and philanthropic support.
  • Develop compelling donor communications and fundraising appeals in partnership with the Communications team.
  • Ensure annual giving campaigns are aligned with organizational priorities, fundraising goals, brand standards, and donor stewardship objectives.

Donor Stewardship & Relationship Management

  • Develop and implement donor onboarding and stewardship journeys that create meaningful engagement and demonstrate donor impact.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with annual and monthly donors, ensuring an exceptional donor experience at every stage of the donor lifecycle.
  • Coordinate donor recognition, acknowledgment, stewardship, and reporting activities in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Identify and support opportunities for qualified annual giving donors to transition into mid-level, major gift, or planned giving portfolios as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organization to ensure consistent donor communications and stewardship practices.

Data Management, Analytics & Reporting

  • Monitor and evaluate fundraising campaign performance through established key performance indicators (KPIs) including revenue, donor retention, donor acquisition, monthly donor growth, and donor upgrades.
  • Analyze donor data and giving trends to identify opportunities for increased engagement, revenue growth, and improved campaign effectiveness.
  • Develop donor segmentation strategies to support targeted fundraising appeals and stewardship activities.
  • Ensure accurate data management, coding, tracking, reporting, and list preparation within the donor database and CRM systems.
  • Prepare regular reports and recommendations for leadership regarding annual giving performance and strategic opportunities.

Vendor & Cross-Department Collaboration

  • Manage relationships with external vendors and service providers including direct mail agencies, digital fundraising partners, lottery providers, print vendors, and other campaign suppliers as required.
  • Work collaboratively with the Communications department to integrate fundraising and marketing strategies across multiple channels.
  • Partner with colleagues across Calgary Humane Society to align donor communications, fundraising initiatives, and organizational priorities.
  • Attend regular team meetings and planning sessions to review objectives, campaign performance, and fundraising results.

Core Competencies:

  • Creates meaningful donor experiences that foster trust, loyalty, and long‑term engagement.

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive fundraising experience, preferably within a charitable or non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrated experience managing annual giving programs, direct mail and email campaigns, monthly giving programs, and digital fundraising initiatives.
  • Experience developing and implementing donor acquisition, retention, reactivation, upgrade, and stewardship strategies.

  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends for meetings, events, and fundraising activities.
  • Genuine interest in animal welfare and alignment with Calgary Humane Society's mission and values.
  • Comfortable with and physically capable of safely handling a variety of animal species including dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and small mammals.
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check arranged through Calgary Humane Society.

Working Conditions:

  • Occasional evening and weekend work is required to support donor meetings, organizational events and fundraising activities.
  • Some local travel may be required for donor visits, meetings, presentations and community events.
  • Work involves managing competing priorities, meeting deadlines and responding to time‑sensitive donor and organizational needs.
  • The position requires a high degree of discretion when handling confidential donor, financial and organizational information.
  • Work may involve exposure to emotionally sensitive situations and information concerning animals in distress, illness, neglect or end‑of‑life circumstances.
  • As the position is based in an animal shelter, occasional exposure to animals, animal‑related noise, odours, dander and cleaning products should be expected.
  • Occasional movement and lifting of event materials, supplies or equipment may be required.
  • Work must be performed in accordance with CHS health and safety policies, privacy requirements and established animal‑handling protocols.

Compensation:

  • Salary commensurate with experience and education.

What We Offer:

  • 100% employer‑paid health and dental benefits for employees and their eligible dependants.
  • Vision coverage and a Wellness Spending Account.
  • Employer‑matched RSP contributions.

  • Professional development and career‑growth opportunities.
  • Discounts on CHS products and services, including adoption fees.
  • Access to an Employee and Family Assistance Program and reduced‑rate counselling services.
  • Free on‑site parking.
  • A meaningful, mission‑driven workplace where your work directly supports animals and people in the community.

Our Commitment to Inclusion:

The people and families we serve are diverse, and Calgary Humane Society is committed to building an inclusive workplace that reflects the community around us. We believe that different identities, lived experiences, perspectives, and abilities strengthen our organization and help us better support animals and the people who care for them.

We welcome applications from all qualified candidates and particularly encourage applications from people who have historically faced barriers to employment. We are committed to an accessible and equitable recruitment process, and accommodation is available at any stage upon request.

We thank all applicants for their interest. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. To ensure a fair and consistent recruitment process, we are unable to respond to telephone or email inquiries regarding applications.
