If you’re an experienced journalist and inclusive leader with strong news instincts and ideas about setting a news agenda aimed at delivering for existing CBC News audiences and drawing in new ones, this is the opportunity for you.This position is backfilling a secondment and is available for one year.Responsibilities include setting Calgary’s news agenda with strong, original daily morning rollouts, guiding the daily news agenda, determining breaking news response and deployments where needed, and assigning high-impact journalism projects in collaboration with newsroom leadership.You are curious about the city, its people and its role as a business and cultural hub. A commitment to and understanding of equity and inclusion is a critical asset.You should have knowledge of the CBC’s mission to inform, to reveal, to contribute to the understanding of issues of public interest. You should have an understanding of CBC’s news programming across platforms and be able to demonstrate commitment to public service journalism in a digital age. You have your finger on the pulse of changing audience consumption trends and want to meet audiences where they are to serve their needs.You are excited by experimentation. You are eager to drive change and bring others along for the ride.Reporting to the executive producer, the successful candidate will work in collaboration with other editorial leaders with CBC Calgary and across the CBC News division to deliver the best content for live and on-demand platforms in text, audio and video formats.What you do:Ensure CBC Calgary is setting the agenda every day for top local news storiesWork with editorial leaders to determine daily news priorities, develop innovative content strategies, and guide teams daily through breaking and ongoing news stories.Work collaboratively with other editorial leaders to align programming, assignment, story generation and production.Communicate with team leads across CBC Calgary on priority stories and assignments.Assign reporters and video producers across all platforms.Determine rollouts on a short term and long term basis.Vet scripts, provide feedback and coaching as required.Guide teams through complex journalism and editorial standards, in association with senior leadership.Plan and coordinate special programming, such as live events and in depth series.What you bring:Minimum of 5 years related editorial newsroom leadership experience.Strong journalistic experience and knowledge of newsgathering, particularly in a breaking news environment.Extensive experience with journalistic standards and practices.Superior understanding of journalistic craft, storytelling and program generation.A knowledge and understanding of audience measurement targets.Demonstrable leadership skills and experience to inspire and direct staff during periods of significant change.In-depth understanding of emerging news platforms and audience consumption trends.Experience with experimentation in news media, including producing novel news formats, shows or pilots.Experience guiding and developing talent, craft and performance.Proven ability to find solutions to a variety of technical, resource and operational issues, make decisions to tight deadlines.Ability to handle multiple priorities while juggling tasks and/or projects.Strong analytical skills to solve complex journalistic and operational issues.Strong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to be clear, concise, and precise on journalistic and programming matters.Knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting and journalism.Cultural sensitivity, awareness and a demonstrated commitment to the value of diversity in the workplace.Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.CBC/Radio-Canada is committed to being a leader in reflecting our country’s diversity.
