PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Reporting to the Director, Finance & Operations, the Accountant assists the Business Office with the preparation of a variety of financial statements, schedules and reports and the reconciliation of bank accounts for both entities – Louis Brier Home & Hospital and Weinberg Residence. The Accountant is also responsible for a variety of accounts payable/receivable clerical support duties including processing invoices for payment, performing data entry, preparing bank deposits, mail out of cheques, filing and other related clerical duties as required. The Accountant will assist the development of the Business Office including the implementation and ongoing management of the new ERP solution.

Located in the Oakridge area of Vancouver, B.C., Louis Brier Home and Hospital is an "Exemplary Status" accredited long-term care facility situated next to the Weinberg Residence (Assisted Living Suites and Multi-Level Care, both Private Pay). Resident and employee safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at LBHH/WR, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Performs accounting duties including completing financial reports and verifying Trust fund balances; verifying and processing accounts payable; preparing year end schedules and monthly journal vouchers; and preparing financial statements and analyzing financial reports. The incumbent assists in generating vendor payments, performs a wide variety of accounts receivable duties and provides support with payroll and reception duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounting Duties:

  • Perform month-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, and prepaid expense adjustments
  • Reviews general ledger activity for accuracy and completeness and investigates unusual transactions, variances, and discrepancies prior to monthly close.
  • Verifies balances of Accounts Receivable and Resident Trust funds, as prepared by Accounts Receivable Clerk. Investigates and resolves discrepancies.
  • Prepares, reviews, and submits mandatory financial reports to Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and the Ministry of Finance in accordance with regulatory timelines and formats, including cost reports, reconciliation schedules, and any ad hoc reporting requirements.
  • Performs monthly bank reconciliations for all organizational accounts, investigates and resolves outstanding or unexplained items in a timely manner
  • Verifies year end inventory balances, as prepared by Stores Coordinator/AP. Investigates and resolves discrepancies.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly and investigate discrepancies.
  • Support year-end audit preparation, working papers, and auditor requests.
  • Prepares and/or assists with the preparation of financial statements, government reports, statistical reports, and reports to auditors as required following established formats.
  • Update Leadsheets and ensure that all the schedules including depreciation, fixed assets, deferred capital, deferred operating, mortgage are all tie to the financial statements.
  • Assist Financial Analyst in annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting cycles by partnering with cross-functional teams to gather inputs, validate assumptions, and ensure consistency with organizational priorities.
  • Relieves AR, Financial Analyst and Accounts Payable positions as required
  • Assist with preparation of monthly financial statements and variance analyses.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial reporting, internal controls, and accounting processes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or actively enrolled in and working towards CPA designation, supplemented by a minimum of three (3) years of recent related accounting experience, preferably in a healthcare or not-for-profit environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Experience with Vancouver Coastal Health reporting requirements and/or Ministry of Finance reporting is considered a strong asset.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, reconciliations, and financial reporting
  • Experience with ERP systems; Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is a strong asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Power BI
  • Familiarity with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) reporting processes and Ministry of Finance funding submissions
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and not-for-profit accounting standards
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to organize work and manage competing deadlines
  • Physical ability to carry out duties of the position
