Job description

About the Company

lululemon is an innovative performance apparel company for yoga, running, training, and other athletic pursuits. Setting the bar in technical fabrics and functional design, we create transformational products and experiences that support people in moving, growing, connecting, and being well. We owe our success to our innovative product, emphasis on stores, commitment to our people, and the incredible connections we make in every community we're in. As a company, we focus on creating positive change to build a healthier, thriving future and an equitable, inclusive, growth‑focused environment for our people.

About This Role

Senior Director sets the creative and technical direction for North America store design, raising the bar on quality, craft, fixture innovation, and premium guest experience across the lululemon fleet. The role balances concept excellence with retail‑at‑scale execution, leading a large team and external partner network through ambiguity, changing priorities, and complex cross‑functional decision‑making.

Responsibilities

  • Lead store design and planning for all North America new store openings, renovations, special projects, and brand activations, partnering closely with Retail Operations, Store Development, Brand Marketing, Merchandising, and Planning.
  • Own relationships with a portfolio of architecture and design partners, ensuring projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest standards of brand expression and guest experience.
  • Set the creative and technical vision for North America store design, elevating quality, materiality, fixture design, and the premium feel of lululemon retail environments.
  • Lead the end‑to‑end design process from concept development through construction and post‑opening review, ensuring both design excellence and operational feasibility.
  • Partner closely with Global teams to translate design principles into regionally relevant solutions while contributing North America insights that help shape and evolve future global concepts.
  • Define and continuously improve the guest journey through store layout, navigation, product storytelling, fitting rooms, service experiences, and omnichannel touchpoints.
  • Drive large‑scale design rollouts across the North American fleet, balancing elevated creative vision with operational excellence, speed to market, and scalable execution.
  • Develop and maintain scalable design standards, fixture programs, material palettes, and toolkits that enable consistent execution across new stores, renovations, pop‑ups, flagships, and experiential formats.
  • Partner with Real Estate, Construction, Procurement, Finance, Retail Operations, Visual Merchandising, Brand, and external agencies to deliver commercially successful and operationally effective stores.
  • Establish and uphold design quality standards by reviewing drawings, fixtures, materials, prototypes, and site conditions to ensure alignment with brand, budget, and local requirements.
  • Build, mentor, and inspire a high‑performing team of store design professionals and external partners, fostering a culture of creativity, accountability, and continuous development while delivering results across a complex portfolio of projects.
  • Champion innovative and nimble approaches to design challenges, finding practical solutions that move the business forward while challenging the status quo.
  • Leverage guest, educator, operational, and business insights to continuously evolve store concepts, design standards, and future rollout strategies.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience in retail store design, architecture, or interior design for a consumer‑focused global brand.
  • 10+ years of experience leading store design teams, with a proven track record of building high‑performing organizations and mentoring, coaching, and inspiring top talent to deliver exceptional results.
  • Strategic, creative, and people‑focused leader with the ability to influence senior executives, including CEO, President, and Board‑level audiences, supported by strong business and financial acumen.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management, collaboration, and negotiation skills, with a proven ability to partner effectively across global and regional teams and operate successfully within complex matrixed organizations.
  • Demonstrated integrity, accountability, and commitment to developing talent, fostering high‑performing teams, and creating an inclusive culture.
  • Degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or equivalent; NCIDQ and/or LEED accreditation considered an asset.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Smartsheet, and Microsoft Office; experience with Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Enscape, V‑Ray, or other visualization tools is an asset.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating elevated creative vision, premium retail design, spatial storytelling, fixture development, technical excellence, and successful execution across multiple store formats at scale.
  • Deep understanding of guest experience, visual merchandising, store planning, retail construction, building codes, accessibility requirements, sustainability, and operational performance.
  • Proven success leading large‑scale retail design rollouts, managing complex portfolios, and balancing creative ambition with business, operational, and financial objectives.
  • Experience working within global and regional design models, adapting global concepts for local markets while maintaining brand consistency and governance.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity, challenge conventional thinking, and develop innovative solutions in a fast‑paced and evolving environment.
  • Travel required up to 40%.

Must Haves

  • Acknowledge the presence of choice in every moment and take personal responsibility for your life.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit and continuously innovate to achieve great results.
  • Communicate with honesty and kindness and create the space for others to do the same.
  • Lead with courage, knowing the possibility of greatness is bigger than the fear of failure.
  • Foster connection by putting people first and building trusting relationships.
  • Integrate fun and joy as a way of being and working, i.e., doesn’t take yourself too seriously.

Additional Leadership Must Haves

  • Raise the creative bar while staying grounded in operational realities, budget, timeline, and constructability.
  • Create clarity in ambiguity, make strong decisions with incomplete information, and help the team stay focused through change.
  • Balance premium, guest‑first design with scalable execution, speed to market, and long‑term fleet health.
  • Build an inclusive, high‑performing design culture that develops future leaders and encourages bold thinking, technical rigor, and accountability.
  • Influence across global and regional stakeholders, resolving trade‑offs with clear storytelling, data, design expertise, and business judgment.
  • Stay curious about culture, architecture, fashion, wellness, hospitality, technology, and retail innovation, bringing outside inspiration into the lululemon guest experience.

Additional Notes

Immigration support is potentially available for this role.
