Lab Instruction Coordinator (Kinesiology - Limited Term)

Position Summary

:

As a key member of the Department of Kinesiology & Physical Education, the Lab Instruction Coordinator (Kinesiology and Physical Education) provides lab-based/tutorial based instruction to support course content in human physiology and anatomy, exercise physiology, advanced fitness assessment and prescription, biomechanics, motor learning and control, statistics, sport humanities and physical activity practicum tutorials. Reporting to the Departmental Chair for Kinesiology and Physical Education, this position is responsible for overseeing and for providing lab-based instruction in a range of laboratories and tutorials with an emphasis in pedagogy, sport and exercise psychology, sport humanities and physical activity practicum tutorials.

The incumbent acts as a resource for students, staff and faculty in KPE and consults with faculty members concerning course and lab content, and provides training and oversight to Graduate Teaching Assistants and Undergraduate Instructional Assistants.

The Lab Coordinator develop laboratory content, and is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of labs – including purchasing, maintaining and repairing all equipment. The incumbent is responsible for the design, instruction, evaluation, and revision of laboratory exercises and experiments. They develop manuals, study guides, assignments, and lab tests/exams to support the lab and lecture content and ensure that the labs’ outcomes contribute to the educational goals of the department. The Lab Coordinator works independently and is responsible for ensuring safe laboratory practices in assigned undergraduate labs.

Accountabilities

Teaching

• Instructs lab sessions as required, including a review of theory/ background information
• Instructs students on proper use and safety of equipment in the laboratory or classroom setting
• Be available to meet with students individually and in groups as needed (electronically and in person) outside of regularly scheduled lab hours
• Supports students in the development of professional work habits and efficient use of finite resources; pedagogical objective includes improving student skill in tackling problems, relating to and working with peers, time management, choosing efficient learning techniques, and structured approaches
• Integrate new research findings, methods and techniques into course content
• Assesses and grades student academic materials, providing timely feedback of quizzes, assignments, presentations
• Develop protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP) and regulatory compliance documentation as they pertain to labs (including working with Health and Safety annually to ensure student screening for exercise safety and documentation / consent for blood collection are being completed as per university guidelines)
• Demonstrate various fundamental movements skills and more advanced movement integrations with individual and team sports
• Teach within various environments (e.g. laboratory, classrooms, and gymnasiums)
• Investigates and reports on allegations of academic misconduct; Responding to requests from the Faculty of Science Academic Advising Office to provide student information pertaining to course attendance, grades and petitions
• Monitor performance and attendance of students, identify any students as possible early intervention candidates
• Participates in departmental and university functions and committees

Lab and Tutorial Development

• In consultation with course instructors, designs, and prepares lab exercises to support course content in tutorial/ laboratory/ practicum courses in the BKin program
• Authors and edits lab manuals and other materials for pedagogical purposes; creates test materials and assignments for student laboratories; routinely reviews and updates the material
• Sets up, purchases, maintains and oversees setup of laboratory equipment
• Establish evaluations and criteria for lab exams, assignments and quizzes

Selection and Supervision of TA/IA

• In consultation with KPE graduate advisor, and KPE Departmental Chair, determine the course assignments for TAs and/or IAs
• Post and review application for selection of IAs for courses assigned
• Oversees the work of any instructional assistant assigned to the labs/tutorials
• Trains and supervises any graduate or undergraduate student teaching assistant assigned to provide instruction;
• Educate TA/IAs on proper use and safety for utilizing laboratory equipment and laboratory SOPs
• Provide detailed marking rubrics to marking IA’s/TA’s

Equipment

• Evaluate relevant new software and hardware as it becomes available; makes recommendations for its beneficial use in the labs
• Maintains, stores, and takes inventory of all laboratory equipment for courses for which they have responsibility and orders supplies as required for undergraduate labs
• Maintain SOP and chemical inventories in accordance to legislation, keep up to date first aid / cpr training
• Maintains moves and takes inventory of all physical educational equipment for course which they have responsibility for, order replacement as required.
• Be well versed in technical aspects of all equipment within the lab, this includes reading technical manuals

This position has responsibility for:

• Teaching assistants
• Instructional assistants and or markers

Qualifications

• Masters Degree in Kinesiology or other relevant discipline
• Three years of recent/related experience;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work within a team setting
• Motivated to work independently
• High degree of problem solving ability
• In-depth knowledge of and experience performing comparable work;
• Well-developed interpersonal skills; understanding of kinesiology and physical education with an emphasis in pedagogy, sport and exercise psychology, sport humanities and physical activity practicum tutorials
• Proven skill in authoring and editing lab materials, in developing lab exercises and tests, establishing marking criteria, and evaluating methods and results;
• Skill in the use of hardware and software related to kinesiology, including metabolic carts, electromyography, and statistical and other software packages;
• Sound knowledge of all programs available through Microsoft Office and experience with learning management systems (e.g., Desire to Learn/MyLs)
• Past experience in training and supervising undergraduate and graduate students
• Well-developed organizational skills such as advanced planning, scheduling and organizing of time, resources, materials, and available personnel;
• Ability to work within deadlines
• Ability to lift and position equipment as required for labs, up to 50 lbs;
• First aid training preferred but training will be provided to the successful candidate

Hours of Work: This is a full-time, limited-term position with an approximate end date of August 13, 2027. The normal hours of work are scheduled Monday-Friday from 8:30am until 4:30pm, including evening labs. The manager will adjust the schedule when possible, to ensure no more than 35 hours per week are worked. Flexibility of hours required to provide service for afternoon or evening labs.

This role offers limited flexibility regarding flexible work arrangements. Please see Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy) for more information. All arrangement must be approved by the direct manager. On occasion, this schedule may need to be adjusted to meet operational requirements.

Compensation:

Level: G

Rate of Pay: $52.17 to $55.14 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $59.63 per hour.
