Senior Estimator (Heavy Civil)

Location: Markham, ON (In-Office)

Salary: $130,000 - $175,000 + Annual Bonus

We are seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to join a growing heavy civil construction team. This role is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive cost estimates and leading the tendering process for complex infrastructure projects, including roads, highways, bridges, and other heavy civil works.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction and has successfully managed estimates for large-scale infrastructure projects. This is a fully in-office position based in Markham, Ontario.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating & Tender Preparation

• Prepare comprehensive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects, including roads, highways, bridges, and municipal infrastructure.
• Review and interpret tender drawings, specifications, contracts, and bid documents.
• Complete accurate quantity take-offs from drawings and project documentation.
• Develop detailed pricing for labour, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and purchased items.
• Identify project risks, opportunities, scope gaps, value engineering options, and potential cost impacts.
• Prepare preliminary construction schedules to support tender submissions.
• Coordinate bid bonds, insurance requirements, and tender documentation.

Tender Management

• Lead the estimating process from bid invitation through tender submission.
• Coordinate design-build and traditional bid opportunities.
• Facilitate estimating meetings and establish project objectives.
• Present project scope, construction approach, staging plans, risks, constraints, and cost-saving opportunities.
• Review subcontractor quotations and perform bid analysis.
• Ensure all tender submissions are accurate, complete, and submitted on time.
• Maintain organized tender files and documentation.

Project & Client Support

• Respond to client inquiries and follow up on submitted bids.
• Collaborate with operations, project management, and field teams throughout the estimating process.
• Provide technical estimating support during project execution when required.
• Monitor awarded projects and assist with job cost reviews and estimate comparisons.

Leadership

• Mentor and support junior estimators.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating procedures, standards, and best practices.
• Participate in departmental initiatives and process improvements.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of estimating experience within heavy civil construction.
• Proven experience estimating roads, highways, bridges, municipal infrastructure, and other heavy civil projects.
• Demonstrated experience preparing estimates for projects ranging from several million dollars to large-scale infrastructure projects.
• Strong knowledge of Design-Build and traditional procurement methods.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, contracts, and tender documents.
• Experience with estimating software (InEight experience is considered an asset).
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
• Solid understanding of OPSS specifications, contract administration, and construction methodologies.
• Experience working on MTO and/or municipal infrastructure projects is highly preferred.
• Civil Engineering degree or Civil Engineering Technology diploma is considered an asset.
• Valid Ontario driver's licence.
