Job description
Adecco is currently hiring a full-time Mechanical (Car) Supervisor, to lead day to day mechanical operations for one of our railway-sector clients. Based primarily at a main terminal, this role supervises unionized employees to ensure railcar inspection, maintenance, and repair activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all regulatory and operational standards.

The Supervisor may also serve as an on-call resource supporting remote locations (line points) when required. As a leader in a 24/7 operational environment, this position is critical to achieving fleet availability, reliability, and dwell targets in support of customer commitments.

Responsibilities:
Safety Leadership, Compliance & Enforcement
  • Coach, train, and mentor mechanical employees on safe and productive work practices
  • Lead Online Failure Investigations, corrective actions, and follow-up activities
  • Drive safety compliance through efficiency testing, safety walkabouts, and continuous feedback
  • Respond to Dangerous Goods incidents and leaks, liaising with Dangerous Goods Officers to ensure public and employee safety
  • Develop, implement, audit, and maintain standard operating procedures
  • Ensure performance against safety metrics, including accidents, incidents, and injuries
  • Lead onboarding and training of new employees and supervisors
  • Meet Performance Monitoring Reporting Compliance (PMRC) targets
  • Oversee preventative maintenance programs for yard vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain compliance with audit and regulatory requirements (AAR inspections, qualifications, certifications)
  • Actively participate in the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) and Apprentice Committees
Problem Solving & Decision Making
  • Lead wrecking response for yard and line outages, coordinating with Transportation, Engineering, and Mechanical teams
  • Analyze inspection and repair productivity using CN data systems
  • Develop and implement actions to improve fleet reliability and inspection efficiency
  • Maintain teamwork and order across employees, contractors, and internal stakeholders, responding quickly to operational issues
Planning & Organizing Work
  • Ensure effective crew utilization for car inspections and air brake testing
  • Maintain car inspection and productivity standards to meet service plans
  • Strategically prioritize repairs to reduce bad-order counts and dwell times
  • Drive fleet reliability metrics, including car availability and terminal delays
  • Maximize productivity, attendance, and labour cost efficiency
  • Manage inventory levels for PPE, parts, and supplies
Leadership & Workforce Supervision
  • Communicate company objectives, policies, and expectations clearly
  • Lead the Earnings Per Share (EPS) performance management process for union and non-union employees
  • Conduct investigations and support discipline processes in accordance with collective agreements
  • Foster desired behaviors through coaching, recognition, and reinforcement
  • Oversee payroll administration, time requests, and accounts payable activities
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Minimum 4 years of supervisory experience managing union and non-union employees (asset)
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in railroad mechanical shopcraft or a comparable industrial mechanical role (asset)
  • Electrical and mechanical maintenance experience required
  • High School Diploma (required)
  • Valid Driver's License (required)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (asset)
  • Mechanical or Electrical Technician/Technologist Diploma (asset)
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence diverse audiences
  • Sound judgment and timely, informed decision-making
  • Collaborative mindset with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Proactive risk identification and mitigation
  • Continuous improvement focused on safety, reliability, and environmental impact
  • Leads by example in safety, security, and ethical standards
  • Bilingual in English and French (asset)
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
  • Experience with SRS, SAP, PAP, and operational systems such as RTBI, DataCity, SmartYard
  • Comprehensive knowledge of:
  • Railcar construction, inspection, repair, and operation
  • Transport Canada and AAR regulations
  • Mechanical railroad operating standards and measures
  • Must be legally eligible to work, and reside in Canada
