Crown Prosecutor 3 - ($7,450.08 to $8,260.75/bi-weekly) ($194,447.09 to $215,605.58/year)

The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice.

Are you a lawyer with exceptional litigation skills?

The Alberta Crown Prosecution Services Division (ACPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Crown Prosecutor to join the Prosecutions team at the Edmonton Rural and Regional Response Office (ERRRO) in Alberta.

As a Crown Prosecutor, you will play a vital role in delivering justice through fearless, fair, and effective prosecutions. The responsibilities of the role encompass a broad range of prosecutorial duties, including bail hearings, charge screening, early case resolution, alternative measures, determining whether to proceed to trial or discontinue a prosecution, conducting prosecutions, entering stays of proceedings, withdrawing charges, plea resolution, providing disclosure, electing to proceed summarily or by indictment, taking positions on sentencing, drafting legal opinions and briefing materials, working with victims, witnesses, and police, and initiating appeals.

Specific accountabilities of the position include

  • Ensuring the public interest is served and just outcomes are achieved.
  • Providing the Court with evidence and legal arguments that are fair, accurate, and complete.
  • Conducting prosecutions involving serious and complex cases in a highly competent manner.
  • Working closely with victims of crime and their families.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD), and active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta isrequired.

  • Crown Prosecutor 1: a minimum of 0-4 years legal experience isrequired.
  • Crown Prosecutor 2: a minimum of 4 years legal experience isrequired.
  • Crown Prosecutor 3: a minimum of 11 years legal experience isrequired.

Other requirement

  • For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) isrequired.
  • A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License and travel within the province.

This opportunity is located in Edmonton.

The Hours of Work are 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Travel within Alberta to circuit court locations is a requirement for this role.

Final candidates for this position will be asked to undergo security screening. Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the candidate.

This competition may be used to fill future permanent, temporary, full time and part time vacancies.

Successful candidate(s) may be eligible for relocation expenses up to $10,000.00.
