Job description

Under the guidance and direction of the Election Supervisor, the Election Official supports the administration of local government elections in accordance with applicable British Columbia legislation, municipal procedures, and election integrity requirements. The role involves assisting voters, verifying eligibility documentation where required, issuing ballots, maintaining accurate records, supporting voting place operations, and helping ensure that all election activities are conducted fairly, impartially, securely, and confidentially.

Applicants must be available September 17th or 23rd, 2026, for training in the evening and October 17th, 2026, for General Voting Day and potentially available for advance poll dates of either October 7th or 10th, 2026.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the setup, operation, and closing of voting places.
  • Welcome voters and provide clear, respectful, and impartial assistance regarding voting procedures.
  • Confirm voter information and review of identification and required declarations in accordance with established procedures.
  • Issue ballots, voting materials, and instructions to eligible voters.
  • Maintain accurate voter records, logs, forms, and incident documentation.
  • Monitor voting place activities to help ensure compliance with election rules, security protocols, and accessibility requirements.
  • Respond appropriately to routine voter inquiries and escalate complex issues to the election supervisor.
  • Support ballot box control, sealing procedures, reconciliation activities, and vote-count preparation as assigned.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of voter information and election records.
  • Perform other election-related duties consistent with the role.

The successful candidate for this position will have:

  • Ability to understand and follow detailed written procedures and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to act with strict political neutrality, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in handling records and documentation.
  • Ability to provide courteous customer service in a high-volume public setting.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in time-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow directions from election supervisors.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing.

This position is excluded from the CUPE Local 498 bargaining unit. Successful applicants will be paid $50 for training and $24.00 per hour during polling, plus 4% in lieu of vacation and holiday pay.
