What We Do

Since , The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care.

Abbeydale Place and Prelude are low-barrier, recovery-oriented supportive housing programs operating under a Place-Based Supportive Housing (PBSH) model. These programs provide long-term housing and intensive wrap-around supports to single adults who have been chronically unhoused and high levels of vulnerability related to concurrent physical health conditions, mental illness, substance use, and cognitive impairment.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Case Manager works within a multidisciplinary team and provides ongoing intensive case management support to program participants which focuses on physical/mental health and substance use awareness, system navigation, coaching, crisis support, life skills development, and meeting social, cultural and basic needs. The Case Manager understands the population we serve and prides themselves on providing an inclusive and safe environment for all program participants as they establish and maintain permanent housing.

This is a permanent, full-time position.

What You Will Do

Program Philosophy

  • Offer culturally sensitive services, where indicated.
  • Uphold the principles of Harm Reduction and Housing First.
  • Understand the Residential Tenancy Act.
  • Understand and follow program policies and procedures.

Administrative

  • Understand and practice from the Standards of Accreditation (CAC).
  • Complete monthly evidence-based assessments tools with program participants and required data entry (HMIS and CHR etc.).
  • Create, implement and update client-centered service plan goals, safety planning, wellness contracts and treatment plans.
  • Complete daily administrative shift duties.

Client Care

  • Provide intensive case management to individuals exiting homelessness, using an Intensive Case Management model.
  • Support participants experiencing acute, severe, and persistent mental health or substance use disorders.
  • Connect participants to appropriate community services and facilitate referrals as needed.
  • Teach and assist with daily living skills in suites and community settings (e.g., cooking, cleaning, financial literacy, grocery shopping, budgeting, laundry).
  • Identify and mitigate risk factors for eviction, working alongside participants to reduce likelihood, including support with monthly room inspections.
  • Accompany participants and/or provide transportation support to external appointments and daily living activities.
  • Advocate for participant rights and ensure equitable access to services.
  • Support systems navigation across justice, financial, and health care systems.
  • Assist participants in obtaining and maintaining income supports.
  • Provide guidance with rent payments and arrear payment plans as needed.
  • Offer medication support and understanding to participants requiring assistance.
  • Demonstrate strong crisis intervention and de‑escalation skills.
  • Maintain openness to a broad scope of practice, with a commitment to innovation and flexibility.

Team

  • Exhibit exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
  • Engage fully in team and treatment planning meetings.
  • Show initiative and work effectively as a team member with minimal supervision, offering support to colleagues as needed.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and collaborate constructively with partner agencies.
  • Provide and welcome ongoing feedback to foster a healthy workplace, strengthen team cohesion, and ensure outstanding program delivery.
  • Contribute positively to team culture through collaboration and accountability.

Program Tasks

  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations in the building.
  • Complete daily cleaning duties and assist with prep/clean-up for participant’s activities as needed (meals, recreation etc.).
  • Facilitate monthly recreation group.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is an asset; a combination of education and relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Experience working in the homelessness sector, along with strong knowledge of community resources is required. Practicum experience will be considered.
  • Knowledgeable and comfort working within harm reduction, housing first, strength based, natural and logical consequences, and trauma informed care techniques as well as an understanding of anti-oppressive practice are required.
  • A strong foundation in addictions and mental health, including schizophrenia, personality disorders, PTSD and trauma.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities to work with complex individuals experiencing addictions, mental health, isolation, homelessness and poverty concerns.
  • Ability to work independently and with confidence when navigating conflict or at-risk populations.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of individuals including demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and providing appropriate person-centred supports for LGBTQ2IA+, Indigenous peoples and persons with culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Exceptional communication, organization, advocacy, teaching, and rapport-building skills.
  • Ability to adapt and effectively build relationships with hard to engage individuals while maintaining appropriate boundaries and ethics.
  • An assertive, professional and positive personality, with an ability to effectively represent the organization.
  • Experience with management alcohol programming and opioid replacement therapy (Suboxone and Methadone) considered an asset.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age and three years of driving experience is required to drive an Alex fleet vehicle.
  • Class 5 driver’s license and a clean 3-year drivers abstract are required.
  • First Aid (Basic or Intermediate) – Level C CPR & AED within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.

Work Environment and Hours:

  • The Alex Prelude: 34 St SE, Calgary, AB.
  • 1.0 FTE (37.5hrs/wk).
  • Standard hours are 7:00 am – 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
  • Continuous extended periods of sitting, with some standing and walking.
  • Frequent climbing/carrying objects up or down stairwells.
  • Occasional driving as part of work duties.
  • Occasional physical action requires the ability to bend/crouch, reach above shoulder height, kneel/crawl, and carry objects (up to and over 20Ibs.) throughout shift. This includes lifting or transferring clients who require assistance.
  • Occasional time outside in all weather conditions.

Driving on Behalf of The Alex

This position requires the use of an Alex fleet vehicle. Successful candidates must show proof of a class 5 driver's license and a clean 3-year drivers abstract. Candidates must consent to the possibility of an annual driver's abstract review to meet our insurance provider’s requirements. Driving a fleet vehicle at The Alex requires that staff are at least 21 years of age with a minimum of three years’ driving experience. Mileage will be reimbursed in alignment with the CRA guidelines.
