Job description

Who we are

For over 25 years, Global Relay has set the standard in enterprise information archiving with industry-leading cloud archiving, surveillance, eDiscovery, and analytics solutions. We securely capture and preserve the communications data of the world’s most highly regulated firms, giving them greater visibility and control over their information and ensuring compliance with stringent regulations.

Though we offer competitive compensation and benefits and all the other perks one would expect from an established company, we are not your typical technology company. Global Relay is a career-building company. A place for big ideas. New challenges. Groundbreaking innovation. It’s a place where you can genuinely make an impact – and be recognized for it.

We believe great businesses thrive on diversity, inclusion, and the contributions of all employees. To that end, we recruit candidates from different backgrounds and foster a work environment that encourages employees to collaborate and learn from each other, completely free of barriers.

Your role

The US Tax Manager is highly collaborative with our Financial Reporting, AR & Billing, and Payroll teams to work to ensure that US tax compliance is timely and accurate. The US Tax Manager takes a broad strategic view of the tax function while ensuring comprehensive analysis and problem solving of tax matters and is involved in international tax matters outside of the US.

Your responsibilities

    • Own the financial reporting impact of US corporate taxes including the recognition of corporate tax expense and disclosure within Global Relay’s financial statements and book-to-tax analyses
    • Own compliance of US corporate income taxes and required information reporting including coordination of services with external consultants and performing comprehensive review of deliverables thereof
    • Monitor corporate tax thresholds and perform detailed research of when corporate tax nexus has been breached and working through project plan to obtain various registrations when required, working alongside internal teams and external tax advisors and counsel
    • Collaborate with the Tax Manager regarding both the documentation and implementation of transfer pricing strategies and policies for foreign subsidiary entities, particularly the United States, including performing modelling and engaging with external consultants when necessary
    • Manage taxation-related audit queries and information requests
    • Stay current with relevant US and international law, trends, and developments and advise senior management on implications of changes
    • Identify and assist with tax planning strategies in conjunction with senior management and external consultants
    • Perform ad hoc tax analysis on tax implications of transactions as needed
  • Indirect Tax
    • Own compliance of sales and use tax and other taxes, such as gross receipts and franchise, for a growing portfolio of jurisdictions within the United States, including detailed review of work performed by junior staff to support such filings
    • Monitor sales tax nexus thresholds and perform detailed research of when sales tax nexus has been breached
    • Collaborate with the Tax Manager to ensure the accuracy of sales taxability conclusions for Global Relay’s nuanced product offering by performing thorough research and exercising strong problem-solving skills when assessing state and local sales tax legislation against Global Relay’s facts and circumstances, specifically with a focus on US state and local taxation rules
    • Champion the next phase of our implementation of a sales tax engine, including designing and optimizing processes to drive efficiency and accuracy of sales tax collection, reporting and remittance.
    • Manage all tax related inquiries (internal and external) and maintain all tax documentation related to the taxability of services such as tax residency, exemption certificates, and other artefacts
  • Other
    • Due to the centralization of our Finance function in Vancouver, BC, and our highly integrated operations, the US Tax Manager will have the opportunity to cross review and be involved with work and projects in taxation related to other jurisdictions (e.g. Canada, Europe) as the business requires
    • Participate in ad hoc tax, accounting and finance projects, analyses and initiatives when required
