Job description

Career Opportunity

GeoSpectrum is growing and excited to offer a new opportunity for an experienced System Safety Engineer to join our team!

Reporting to the Manager of Systems Engineering, the System Safety Engineer will play a key role in strengthening and evolving GeoSpectrum’s system safety practices. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of our delivered products by applying system‑level safety principles across both hardware and software domains.

You will work closely with cross‑functional teams to identify, assess, and mitigate safety risks, helping to ensure mission success in demanding operational environments. This position is well‑suited to someone with strong knowledge of industry safety standards—particularly MIL‑STD‑882E—and experience supporting safety‑critical systems within the defense, marine, or aerospace sectors.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a growing organization while contributing to the safety and performance of complex, real‑world systems.

About Us

GeoSpectrum Technologies was founded in 1994 by friends who wanted to work together and build a collaborative workplace where employees take pride in contributing to cutting‑edge technology from concept to delivery. Based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, we design and manufacture state‑of‑the‑art underwater acoustic components, transducers, and end‑to‑end systems for maritime surveillance and exploration. Serving clients across ocean science, defence, and oil and gas industries, we are known for our innovation and for delivering reliable, customized solutions that exceed customer expectations. Over three decades, our core values have shaped a supportive and creative environment that emphasizes employee engagement, technical excellence, and strong customer relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with program teams to develop, maintain, and continuously improve key system safety artifacts, including System Safety Program Plans (SSPP), Preliminary Hazard Analyses (PHA), Functional Hazard Analyses (FHA), Sub‑System Hazard Analyses (SSHA), and Safety Assessment Reports (SAR).
  • Serve as the Program Safety Manager for selected programs, owning system safety execution while providing expert guidance and support to smaller initiatives and projects.
  • Actively contribute to the product lifecycle by preparing and delivering safety‑focused presentations and participating in design reviews, test readiness reviews, technical interchange meetings, and internal and customer‑facing safety working groups.
  • Ensure system safety documentation aligns with customer expectations and contractual requirements, supporting successful program execution and compliance.
  • Lead system safety engineering working groups to apply and implement MIL‑STD‑882E or equivalent international system safety standards.
  • Collaborate closely with systems engineering teams to identify hazards and define Safety Functional Requirements early in the design process.
  • Review internal and acceptance test procedures to verify alignment with established system safety requirements and objectives.
  • Play a key role in advancing and strengthening the organization’s System Safety processes, tools, and best practices.
  • Support compliance efforts by helping assess products and systems against applicable environmental regulations and standards, including REACH and RoHS.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Safety, or a related technical discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of hands‑on experience in system safety engineering.
  • Solid understanding of system safety standards and safety‑driven design principles.
  • Proven experience performing hazard identification, hazard analysis, risk mitigation, and developing supporting safety documentation.
  • Working knowledge of MIL‑STD‑882E, including experience with software Level of Rigor (LOR).
  • Experience conducting Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and applying other recognized system safety engineering tools and techniques.
  • Familiarity with additional relevant industry standards and/or range safety standards.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex safety concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively within cross‑functional teams.
  • Familiarity with Naval systems and operating environments.
