Job Title: Mechanical Engineering Design Manager

Reports To: VP of Engineering / President

Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineering Design Manager will play a pivotal role in establishing and growing the mechanical engineering design department within the firm. This individual will not only manage and lead the team but also be deeply involved in hands‑on design work. A key responsibility will be to acquire new clients and build lasting relationships while driving the department’s growth. This position offers a base salary plus bonus structure based on the new clients brought in by the candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hands‑On Design Work:
    • Lead and participate in the design of mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and sustainable energy systems, using both hands‑on design and management.
    • Oversee and execute design work for complex projects, ensuring technical accuracy and adherence to client specifications.
    • Manage the delivery of high‑quality mechanical designs from concept to completion.
  • Client Acquisition and Business Development:
    • Acquire new clients by developing strong relationships with government agencies, property developers, commercial clients, and more.
    • Develop and manage the client pipeline, ensuring a steady stream of new projects for the department.
    • Generate new business by actively seeking out opportunities and securing contracts, with performance bonuses linked to the acquisition of new clients.
    • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, ensuring satisfaction and delivering solutions aligned with their needs.
  • Project Management and Delivery:
    • Oversee all aspects of mechanical engineering projects, including scheduling, resource allocation, and budgeting.
    • Ensure designs meet client specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
    • Lead project teams, ensuring coordination with contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders to meet deadlines and budgets.
  • Department Development and Leadership:
    • Establish and lead the mechanical engineering design department, defining processes, standards, and building a strong team.
    • Recruit, mentor, and manage mechanical engineers and technical staff to ensure high performance and development.
    • Develop and implement best practices, design standards, and workflows for the mechanical engineering department.
    • Collaborate with other departments to ensure the delivery of integrated solutions.
  • Team and Department Growth:
    • Develop and implement training programs to enhance the skills and professional growth of the team.
    • Establish departmental goals and KPIs, ensuring alignment with overall company objectives.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (Master's preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta is required.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the US is a plus.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering design, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven ability to acquire new clients and bring projects in the door.
  • Hands‑on experience in mechanical design work, not just management.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, and other design software.
  • Strong understanding of local building codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements in Calgary and Alberta.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven track record in business development and managing client relationships.
