Job description

Municipal Pipe Layer

Company: Infracon Group of Companies
Location: Prince Rupert, BC
Type: Full-Time / Project-Based
Wage Range: $27.00 – $33.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications

About the Role

The Infracon Group of Companies is seeking experienced Municipal Pipe Layers with a strong grade focus for an upcoming municipal sewer and water infrastructure project in Prince Rupert, BC.

We are looking to connect with skilled pipe layers who can support the safe, accurate, and efficient installation of sewer, water, storm, drainage, manholes, and related underground civil infrastructure.

This role is best suited for a hands-on pipe layer with strong municipal and civil construction experience, including working to grade, reading grade stakes, using pipe lasers, supporting manhole and pipe installs, and working safely in and around trenches, shoring, excavators, and active roadwork environments.

The successful candidate will work closely with Pipe Foremen, excavator operators, labourers, surveyors, inspectors, and project teams to ensure pipe and underground utilities are installed accurately, safely, and to project specifications. We are looking for someone who takes pride in quality workmanship, understands municipal utility installation, and can contribute to productive, well-coordinated civil construction operations.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Municipal Pipe Layer who enjoys infrastructure work and wants to be part of a team delivering important civil projects across Western Canada.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install sanitary sewer, storm sewer, watermain, culverts, drainage systems, and related municipal underground utilities
  • Set, align, grade, and connect pipe according to drawings, specifications, grade stakes, and field direction
  • Work with pipe lasers, levels, grade rods, string lines, stakes, hubs, and other layout tools to support accurate pipe installation
  • Check grades, slopes, elevations, pipe bedding, alignment, and connections throughout installation
  • Assist with manhole, catch basin, valve, fitting, hydrant, service, tie-in, and related municipal infrastructure installation
  • Support pipe bedding, haunching, backfill preparation, compaction, and trench cleanup
  • Identify grade conflicts, utility conflicts, alignment issues, or constructability concerns and report them promptly to supervision

Municipal Underground Utility Work

  • Support installation of sewer, water, storm, drainage, and municipal utility systems
  • Work safely in and around trenches, excavations, shoring systems, existing utilities, and active equipment
  • Assist with connecting pipe sections, fittings, services, tie-ins, manholes, catch basins, valves, and hydrants
  • Support pressure testing, flushing, inspections, deficiency corrections, and preparation for backfill as required
  • Assist with utility crossings, live services, tie-ins, and work in congested municipal environments
  • Help ensure installations are completed to specification and ready for inspection, backfill, road grading, curb and gutter, sidewalk, and surface restoration

Trenching, Shoring & Excavation Support

  • Work safely around trench boxes, shoring systems, sloped excavations, access/egress points, spoil piles, and excavation edges
  • Assist with trench preparation, pipe zone work, bedding placement, backfill support, and compaction activities
  • Follow safe trenching, excavation, confined space, and ground disturbance procedures where applicable
  • Maintain awareness of trench conditions, groundwater, soil stability, overhead hazards, underground utilities, and changing site conditions
  • Communicate clearly with excavator operators, spotters, foremen, and ground crews during trench work
  • Stop and report unsafe conditions or concerns immediately

Civil Construction Support

  • Support road construction, grading, curb and gutter, sidewalk, drainage, surface restoration, and general municipal infrastructure work as required
  • Assist with site preparation, cleanup, material handling, and staging of pipe, fittings, bedding, tools, and supplies
  • Work closely with foremen, surveyors, equipment operators, labourers, inspectors, and project teams
  • Support efficient sequencing of pipe work with grading, concrete, paving, and restoration activities
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas
  • Adapt to changing project requirements, site conditions, weather, and operational priorities

Tools, Materials & Site Organization

  • Participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, field-level hazard assessments, inspections, and site orientations
  • Use required personal protective equipment at all times
  • Maintain strong awareness around trenches, excavations, heavy equipment, traffic, utilities, shoring, slopes, and changing site conditions
  • Identify and report hazards, incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, utility concerns, and environmental issues
