Job description

Consulting Senior Associate, Air Quality and Meteorology Scientist or Engineer

Environmental Resources Management – In‑person, Smithers, BC or Vancouver, BC.

If you’re early in your career and eager to make a real difference, this is your opportunity to step into meaningful, hands‑on environmental work that protects communities and supports major industries across Canada. As a Consulting Senior Associate, Air Quality and Meteorology Scientist or Engineer with ERM in Smithers, BC or Vancouver, BC, you won’t just collect data — you’ll be part of a strategic effort to help mining, oil & gas, and energy clients achieve environmental excellence while learning from North America’s top air quality and climate experts.

At ERM, you’ll gain field experience, technical depth, and exposure to projects that shape environmental standards across the country. You’ll develop real impact early on, supported by a collaborative team committed to mentorship, innovation, and your long‑term professional growth.

Why This Role Matters

Canada’s major industries rely on accurate environmental data to operate safely, responsibly, and sustainably. Your work will directly support air quality and meteorology, ensuring that industrial activity meets regulatory standards and contributes to a lower‑impact future. From remote field sites to analytical work in the office, this role is essential to helping clients make informed decisions that benefit people, communities, and the environment.

What Your Impact Is

In this role, you will:

  • Support high‑priority air quality and meteorology monitoring programs across Canada.
  • Provide reliable data and insights that guide client compliance and environmental strategies.
  • Strengthen ERM’s reputation for technical excellence and innovation within the Air Quality & Climate Change community.
  • Ensure safety and quality standards across all field and office activities.
  • Contribute to a strong culture of learning, collaboration, and shared expertise, working alongside more than 300 air quality professionals across North America.

What You’ll Bring

Required

  • Undergraduate degree in science, chemistry, or engineering (post‑graduate degree considered an asset). Or equivalent experience.
  • 1–2 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with air quality or meteorological monitoring stations.
  • Interest and comfort working outdoors in remote locations under varying environmental conditions.
  • Genuine passion for air quality and meteorology.
  • Strong mechanical skills and general understanding of electrical components for instrumentation and dataloggers.
  • Commitment to safety and a good driving record.
  • Strong spreadsheet and database comprehension; computer programming experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced consulting environment, manage multiple deadlines, and travel to client facilities.
  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Preferred

  • 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Post‑graduate degree in a related scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Air dispersion modelling experience (CALPUFF or AERMOD).
  • Understanding of air emissions, emissions reporting, and regulatory compliance processes.
  • Experience supporting Environmental Assessments.
  • Prior exposure to consulting environments or multi‑task project work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental monitoring for air quality and meteorology, and contributing to compliance reporting.
  • Analyze air quality and meteorological data; perform QA/QC; prepare reports; assess regulatory compliance.
  • Track equipment maintenance and calibration schedules; develop project‑specific standard operating procedures; research new technology.
  • Install, operate, maintain, and calibrate sampling/testing instrumentation.
  • Perform office‑based data collation, processing, and preparation of figures, drawings, and charts for reports.
  • Ensure personal and team safety during project operations.
  • Support ERM’s “Zero Accident” health and safety programs.
  • Travel to remote project sites across Canada.
  • Perform multiple tasks within scope, budget, and schedule expectations while ensuring high‑quality deliverables.
  • Build strong working relationships with clients, ERM colleagues, and subcontractors.
  • Must be comfortable with working at heights up to 10 metres on meteorological towers or aerial lifts.
  • Must be able to carry 40 pound equipment 200 metres in mountainous terrain.

For the Consulting Senior Associate, Air Quality and Meteorology Scientist or Engineer position, the anticipated annual base pay is $68,770 – $85,820 (CAD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed‑term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, parental leave, medical, dental, vision, life, disability, AD&D insurance, 401(k) or RRSP/DPSP, and other applicable benefits to eligible employees.

Note: Bonuses, commissions, and other forms of additional compensation are not guaranteed and subject to the sole discretion of ERM and its policies and procedures.

ERM is an equal‑opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, sex, age, Indigenous identity, or status as a protected veteran or qualified individual with a disability.
