Job description
  • Completion of a two (2) year diploma in an environmental technical program or a related discipline (e.g. environmental technology water resources technology hydrogeological technology or mechanical engineering technology). A Bachelors degree in a suitable engineering or environmental science field will be considered an acceptable alternative to a diploma
  • Minimum of two (2) years of field experience related to noise and vibration monitoring or environmental sampling activities
  • Eligible for recognition as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET)
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent)

Knowledge:

  • Mandatory technical knowledge of soil and water sampling techniques or a foundational understanding of the propagation and attenuation of ground vibrations and environmental noise
  • Mandatory knowledge of the Alberta Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and Regulations as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations

Assets:

  • Vibration analysis experience using specialized software such as Blastware and Thor
  • Noise evaluation experience using Measurement Partner Suite BZ5503 and Evaluator
  • Prior experience preparing chain-of-custody documentation for analytical labs
  • Traffic flagger certification and experience redirecting traffic on roadways
  • Demonstrated GIS skills using ArcGIS or experience utilizing POSSE
  • Familiarity with regulatory documents such as the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act WHMIS City of Edmonton Urban Traffic Noise Policy C506 and Community Standard Bylaws

Skills required for success:

  • Proficiency in data entry validation mathematics and environmental science terminology
  • Excellent digital skills using Google Apps (Google Sheets Docs Drive etc.) including tabulating data and maintaining formulas
  • Ability to read interpret and analyze environmental reports plans specifications diagrams and construction project schedules
  • Strong time management and organizational skills to manage a high volume of work and meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work successfully within a team and handle difficult conversations with members of the public. Ability to work independently on assigned projects and prioritize daily activities in a fast-paced environment

Conditions of Employment:

  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent)or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the majority of working days based from the office and occasional flexibility to work from home as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • This position features a balanced split between an office setting and active field environments
  • Fieldwork involves exposure to all types of outdoor environmental conditions for long periods (including extreme temperatures precipitation dust and varying brightness)
  • This position requires the physical ability to lift up to 20 lbs
  • Tasks may take place on active construction sites roadways public places or private property
  • The role requires wearing standard Personal Protective Equipment (including safety footwear hard hats eye skin hearing and respiratory protection)
  • You may occasionally work alone encounter wildlife or navigate uneven surfaces

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday).
Flexibility for family/caretaker commitments are available.

Salary Range: $39.160 - $49.221 (Hourly); $81766.08 - $102773.45 (Annually)

Are you interested in protecting the environment and ensuring the well-being of our communities The City of Edmonton is looking for a dedicated Environmental Monitoring Technologist to join our Engineering Services section to help advance our long-term environmental studies. This dynamic position offers a mix of field-based environmental sampling and precision noise and vibration monitoring on City construction projects.

Under the direction of the Environmental Compliance Team Supervisor this position assists in the delivery of key infrastructure projects. Your core responsibilities will include conducting long-term vibration monitoring on construction sites executing traffic-related noise and vibration testing and carrying out routine environmental sampling programs. This role entails performing a range of hands-on tasks including installing and calibrating instrumentation collecting soil and water samples and analyzing data using specialized software. You will work under direct supervision for daily operations while receiving technical guidance from Environmental Monitoring Specialists within the team. Ultimately your efforts will ensure the team has the accurate information necessary to guide compliant safe and efficient municipal operations.

What will you do

  • Set up calibrate and configure specialized precision equipment for ground vibration and environmental noise monitoring
  • Collect and download noise and vibration data utilize specialized software and Google Sheets to document and present data and assist specialists in identifying anomalies
  • Conduct routine field sampling and monitoring of soil surface water groundwater sediment landfill gas air particulate matter and winter road materials
  • Perform field analysis and screening using accepted quantitative/qualitative techniques record field observations and accurately complete chain-of-custody documentation
  • Transport samples safely from field locations to approved accredited laboratories for analysis
  • Manage daily schedules and prioritize fieldwork efficiently to meet project timelines
  • Maintain accurate project documentation name and file documents according to City policy
  • Respond to inquiries from community members and external laboratory staff in a professional and considerate manner
  • Other duties as assigned
