  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Urban Planning
  • Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible practical work experience in urban planning policy development or growth management

Assets:

  • Regulated member or candidate for membership with the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI)

Skills required for success:

  • Strong knowledge and experience is required with respect to at least two of the following: strategic policy development land development policy and process municipal finance and civic infrastructure planning
  • Strong working knowledge of the Municipal Development Plan and the Municipal Government Act with an understanding of how these and other tools can be leveraged to achieve growth management goals
  • Demonstrated experience in handling projects that are complex sensitive and have long-term impacts
  • Well-developed demonstrated analytical abilities and problem-solving skills including the ability to work through ambiguity
  • Ability to integrate multiple perspectives to develop and socialize solutions
  • Adept at developing preliminary ideas and concepts into draft deliverables for leadership review
  • Relationship-building and negotiation skills involving multi-party interests
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary team environments
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful inclusive and service-minded style
  • Resiliency to manage competing deadlines and adjust project scope within an evolving political environment

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • This role works primarily in an indoor setting
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs expectations and emotional states

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week

Salary Range: $54.155 - $69.110 (Hourly); $95407.570 - $121754.540 (Annually)

As a Principal Planner reporting to the Senior Planner Urban Growth youll play a pivotal role in developing and implementing strategies that influence Edmontons growth in all aspects - physical social economic and environmental.

Your mission Leading the charge on Edmontons growth management program a vital component of the City Plan vision and part of a key priority for the Urban Planning and Economy Department. Leveraging your urban planning expertise policy know-how and stellar communication skills youll be an integral part of the team driving the creation and execution of complex policies programs and projects.

What will you do

  • Contribute to developing and implementing the growth management program through advancing and integrating initiatives to analyze the fiscal impacts of growth explore growth funding tools support priority growth areas and policy level infrastructure planning and investment including research internal and external engagement and planning activities
  • Collaborate with technical resources and subject matter experts to develop strategies and solutions to advance the growth management program
  • Apply sophisticated understanding of urban and regional planning to complex policy issues and identify solutions in support of evidence-based decision making
  • Anticipate and adjust for factors that may impact responses to and the perceptions efficiency and effectiveness of program deliverables
  • Identify and test planning and growth management related risks and opportunities
  • Prepare and revise business cases and project charters to advance the work of the growth management program
  • Provide support in defining and communicating Edmontons growth management program to Council Committees senior management other departments and external stakeholders including responding to inquiries and preparing reports documents and other materials
  • Draw on your expert knowledge of the Municipal Development Plan District Plans and the Municipal Government Act to inform decisions and support City positions and interests
  • Prepare materials for and participate in internal and external engagement and represent the City Department and Branch related to growth management and urban planning
  • Perform other related duties as required
