Job description

Jim Dent Construction, headquartered in Hope BC, is a respected and long-standing leader in heavy civil construction across British Columbia. With a proven track record of successfully delivering complex infrastructure projects, we’ve built a strong reputation for reliability, performance, and results. Our diverse and highly skilled team brings technical expertise and leadership to every stage of project delivery. If you are committed to excellence and eager to launch your career in heavy civil construction, we invite you to grow with us.

Co-op Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and driven Co-op student to join our team in a role that may encompass Project Coordination, Field Technical Support, and/or Quality Control depending on project needs and the candidate's academic background. This is an exceptional opportunity for a student currently enrolled in a post-secondary Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related program to gain hands-on, real-world experience in one of BC's most respected heavy civil construction companies.

The specific focus of your role will be shaped by active project requirements and your individual strengths - you may find yourself working primarily in project coordination, embedded in field technical support, or contributing directly to quality control programs on active construction sites.

Term Details

  • Term Length: Approximately 4 months (May – August), aligned with standard co-op academic terms

  • Extended Terms: Longer placements (8 or 12 months) may be available for the right candidate, subject to project needs and agreement with academic institution

  • Location: Remote project sites throughout British Columbia. Candidates must be comfortable with and open to remote site-based work

  • Compensation: Competitive co-op wage, commensurate with experience and program level

Strong performers may be considered for rehire in subsequent co-op terms, and high-performing graduates may be invited to join the Jim Dent Construction team on a full-time basis upon graduation. We are proud to develop the next generation of heavy civil construction professionals from within.

Why Join Jim Dent Construction?

  • Gain invaluable industry experience working on complex, high-value heavy civil construction projects across BC

  • Work in dynamic, remote environments that challenge and develop your professional skill set far beyond the classroom

  • Mentorship from industry veterans - you'll work directly alongside experienced Project Managers, Quality Managers, Site Superintendents, and department leads

  • Accelerate your career - the experience gained at Dent is recognized and respected across the BC construction industry

  • Potential for rehire, both for future co-op terms and full-time employment upon graduation

  • Experience BC's most impressive project landscapes, from remote highways and bridges to major infrastructure builds

Team & Culture

The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where no two days look the same. You will be someone who adapts well under pressure, is self-motivated, and takes direction with a positive attitude.

Being a team player with strong communication skills is essential. You will engage with large, multidisciplinary teams and must be a proactive problem solver who is comfortable working in remote job site conditions throughout British Columbia.

Responsibilities

As a Co-op student in this role, you will perform or assist with responsibilities across one or more of the following areas:

Project Coordination

  • Support the administrative and logistical needs of active construction projects

  • Maintain and update project schedules and track deliverables on behalf of Project Managers and department leads

  • Provide regular reporting to multiple departments and corporate offices

  • Clearly communicate areas of concern related to project deliverables

  • Assist in maintaining accurate and organized project records, logs, and files

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships across all departments and levels of the organization

Quality Control

  • Support the implementation and maintenance of the project Quality Management Program

  • Assist the Quality Manager in conducting inspections, audits, and field verification of construction activities

  • Document and track non-conformances, corrective actions, and quality records

  • Review and organize material submittals, test reports, and certifications to ensure compliance with project specifications

  • Assist with material sampling and testing coordination in the field

  • Maintain accurate and thorough quality documentation in accordance with contract and regulatory requirements

  • Support the preparation of quality reporting for clients, consultants, and regulatory bodies

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary Co-op program in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy and quality

  • Ability to work independently while taking direction from multiple leadership roles

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously

  • A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset

  • Willingness and ability to work and live at remote job sites in BC for the duration of the term

  • Familiarity with quality management systems or inspection practices is considered an asset

  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence is considered an asset
