NATIONAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES (2 VOLUNTEER POSITIONS)

POSITION TYPE: Volunteer. Estimated commitment of approximately 4-8 hours per month, including meeting preparation and committee participation.

LOCATION: Flexible, Canada (Primarily remote with 1-2 in-person meetings annually).

POSTING DATE: March 18, 2026

DEADLINE: Open until positions are filled

START DATE: September 2026

The Organization

Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) is Canada’s only national charity dedicated to protecting public land, freshwater and ocean, with a strong presence across the country. For more than 60 years, CPAWS has been a trusted leader in conservation — grounded in science, advocacy, local knowledge and collaboration — working to address the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change.

CPAWS advances the long-term protection of ecologically and culturally significant landscapes and waters, in ways that respect the sovereignty and leadership of Indigenous Nations. We achieve our mission through evidence-based advocacy, public engagement and strong partnerships.

Our vision is bold: permanently protect at least half of Canada’s land, freshwater and ocean to sustain nature and people for generations to come.

Operating on the unceded and unsurrendered lands of the Anishinabe Algonquin Nation, CPAWS works across treaty and unceded territories nationwide. We are committed to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion, and to fostering a safe and welcoming environment for people from diverse backgrounds.

The Role

CPAWS’ National Board of Trustees provides strategic governance oversight rather than operational management. Day-to-day leadership is the responsibility of the National Executive Director and staff. The Board works in partnership with this national team to:

  • Set long-term strategic direction

  • Ensure fiduciary oversight and financial sustainability

  • Monitor organizational performance and risk

  • Oversee and evaluate the National Executive Director

  • Ensure legal, ethical, and policy compliance

  • Safeguard mission alignment and long-term impact

The Opportunity

CPAWS is seeking two new Trustees with the following profiles to join its National Board:

Senior Executive Leader

A current or former CEO, President, Executive Director, or C-suite executive who has led a large, complex, multi-regional or national organization.

Ideal experience includes:

  • Leading growth, transformation, or strategic renewal

  • Oversight of multi-million dollar budgets and enterprise risk

  • Strong board–management partnership experience

  • Public policy, government relations, and/or national stakeholder engagement

Senior Fundraising / Development Leader

A senior development executive with demonstrated success in relationship-building with major donors, foundations and corporate partners.

Ideal experience includes:

  • Major gifts and donor strategy

  • Campaign leadership (capital, endowment, or comprehensive campaigns)

  • Corporate and foundation partnerships

  • Revenue diversification and philanthropic growth strategy (building capacity on the board)

  • Engaging boards in fundraising

Core Assets for Both Positions

  • Commitment to CPAWS’ mission and conservation outcomes

  • Governance experience (non-profit or corporate board experience preferred)

  • Strategic thinking and sound judgment

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills

  • Commitment to diversity and Indigenous reconciliation

Application Submission

We encourage applications from all qualified individuals, including applicants from diverse cultures, racialized communities, abilities, sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, and others who contribute to equitable representation and diverse perspectives.

We are committed to an inclusive and barrier-free recruitment process. Please contact info@cpaws.org if you require accommodation at any stage.

Please apply submitting a cover letter and résumé combined into a single PDF titled: “LAST NAME_Board of Trustees”.

We thank all candidates for their interest. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

L’organisation

• Établir l’orientation stratégique à long terme
