Job description
The opportunity:Under the leadership of the Program Manager the Settlement Worker in the Schools provides assistance to newcomer students and their families as they integrate into the school system and the community. The Settlement Worker in the Schools will work from a home base within the local school boards to deliver settlement support throughout the region and is also responsible for providing referrals and community resources individual and group information sessions and workshops. This role will provide assistance to newcomers to Canada inBarrie as well as delivering services in other communities within Simcoe County. Responsible for the implementation of specific plans to achieve key program goals and role is a coverage for a maternity leave and in addition due to funding will be offered from August 2026 - June this role you will: Embrace YMCAs mission and core values members facility users and program participants with dedicationBe involved in screening and client support by:Assessing program eligibilityGuide students and families with solution-focused counselingMaking relevant referrals to community servicesAddressing service gaps for immigrant students and their familiesAssisting with school integration and community settlementProviding ongoing support and follow-upsParticipating in case management meetingsOffering crisis support when neededImplement resource & information services support through:Responding to inquiries by phone and in personMeeting with students families and school faculty as neededSharing updated resource materials and community infoCreating and deliver newcomer-related workshopsResearching organizing and sharing settlement-related infoConducting workshops for school facultyProviding information individually and in workshopsDelivering activities in-person and virtuallyProvide Community Resources and Foster Networking by:Promoting immigrant programming to various organizations and the communitySharing community service info with YMCA staffFostering welcoming environments for immigrantsBuilding relationships with other immigrant servicesSupport the program initiatives through:Developing necessary forms and materialsCompiling and reporting monthly statisticsMaintaining client tracking and file documentation to program and YMCA standardsKeeping individual files up to standardPerforming other assigned duties as neededYou bring:Completion of post-secondary education from a recognized community college or university preferablyin the areaof social services or settlement; or equivalent settlement training/work experienceValid Class G Drivers License and access to a vehicle for travel throughout Simcoe County on a regular basisPrevious experience working with newcomers and refugeesDemonstrated knowledge of settlement services and community information resources as well as barriers facing newcomers/ immigrants including physical emotional social and financial issuesGood facilitation and presentation skillsExcellent communication skillsGood computer skills; proficient with Microsoft Office and able to effectively use the Internet to research informationAbility to communicate in one of the following language: Arabic Vietnamese Turkish Tamil or Mandarin is an assetKnowledge of the Ministry of Education and the Education Act an assetKnowledge experience and ability to provide case management services to high needs newcomer students and of different cultures and cultural practicesWillingness to participate in mandated training to be completed before or shortly after commencement of work including:AODA TrainingHealth & Safety Awareness TrainingBill 168 (Violence & Harassment in the Workplace) TrainingPCI ComplianceWHMISChild Protection TrainingWhy work for the Y:At the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka we believe in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members and staff.
